Job description

  • Play a key role in managing geological risk, ore quality and mine-to-mill performance at one of Canada's leading iron ore operations.
  • Lead and develop a team of geologists and technicians while contributing to geological modelling and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Based in Labrador City, NL, a vibrant northern community known for its strong sense of community and unparalleled access to nature and outdoor activities.

We're Finding Better Ways to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values - care, courage and curiosity - guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Geologist to help our Iron Ore operations in Labrador City deliver safe, reliable and quality ore to the processing plant. In this role, you will provide technical leadership across grade control, ore quality management, geological risk management and mine-to-mill reconciliation while supporting continuous improvement and resource modelling activities. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex geological challenges, mentoring others and influencing operational performance in a collaborative mining environment.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Geoscience Superintendent and working in a collaborative and safety-focused team within Geoscience, you will:

  • Lead, coach and develop mine geologists and geological technicians to build capability and strengthen safe work practices.
  • Manage geological planning, communication and reporting processes that support ore feed strategy and geological risk management.
  • Oversee grade control activities to optimise ore quality and support production objectives.
  • Govern the mine-to-mill reconciliation process and identify opportunities to improve data quality, accuracy and reporting efficiency.
  • Provide operational geology coverage during team leave periods to maintain continuity of support to mining operations.
  • Collaborate with Mining, Processing and Technical Services teams to optimise ore delivery and operational outcomes.
  • Support geological modelling activities and provide technical peer review for resource modelling work.
  • Drive improvements to geological systems, standards, processes and best practices.

About you

We're looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every "helpful for success" item to apply-if you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Demonstrated capability in grade control, ore quality management, ore feed optimisation and geological risk management within a mining environment.
  • Experience supporting open pit mining operations and applying mine-to-mill reconciliation principles to improve operational performance.
  • Degree in Geology, Earth Sciences or a related discipline and eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with PEGNL.
  • Experience using geological software such as AcQuire, Maptek Vulcan and Leapfrog.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or coordinating geologists and technical teams while working with multiple operational stakeholders.
  • Helpful for Success
  • Experience within iron ore mining operations.
  • Experience in geological modelling and technical peer review processes.

What we offer

Be recognized for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you've helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
  • A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
  • Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical programs, pension and savings plans
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Leave for all of life's reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, sick leave)
  • Exclusive employee discounts

Where you'll be working

We are a leading North American producer and exporter of premium iron ore pellets and high-grade concentrate with average iron grades greater than 66%. With a team of over 2,700 employees, IOC is committed to providing value and continuity for our customers, employees, communities and shareholders through our unique mine to port approach, taking advantage of our full integration and wholly owned infrastructure to deliver our high-quality concentrate and pellets to our customers across the globe.
