Director of Preconstruction

Commercial Construction | Kalamazoo, MI

Compensation: $140,000-$175,000+

We're partnering with a growing commercial construction company in Southwest Michigan to identify a Director of Preconstruction. This newly created leadership role was created to support continued company growth and provide dedicated leadership for an expanding preconstruction department.

The Director of Preconstruction will lead all preconstruction activities from early client engagement through the transition to Operations. This individual will oversee a team of two estimators, partner closely with Business Development and Project Management and help establish scalable processes, standards and best practices as the department continues to grow.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing technical estimating, client relationships, team leadership and strategic planning. You'll serve as the primary preconstruction resource for clients, helping guide projects from conceptual budgeting and planning through final design before transitioning them to the Operations team.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop the preconstruction team.
• Prepare, review and validate conceptual budgets and estimates.
• Partner with Business Development to support project pursuits, client presentations and early project planning.
• Lead design-build and design-assist efforts.
• Review project scope, constructability, pricing and risk.
• Develop and implement preconstruction processes, estimating standards and best practices.
• Coordinate seamless handoffs from Preconstruction to Operations.
• Evaluate workload, staffing needs and future growth of the department.
• Build strong relationships with clients, architects, consultants and internal project teams.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of commercial construction experience in preconstruction, estimating, project management or design-build delivery.
• Experience leading or mentoring high-performing teams.
• Strong conceptual estimating and budgeting experience.
• Experience with negotiated, design-build and collaborative project delivery methods.
• Excellent communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to improve processes, develop best practices and help build a scalable preconstruction function.
• Experience with Bluebeam, Procore, Revit and/or RSMeans is beneficial.
