Job description
The Network Cabling Designer is responsible for designing, documenting, and supporting structured cabling and network infrastructure solutions for commercial, industrial, data center, and enterprise environments. This role works closely with project managers, network engineers, architects, contractors, and customers to develop accurate, code-compliant cabling designs and construction documentation.
The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of structured cabling systems, telecommunications infrastructure, pathways and spaces, low-voltage standards, and computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
Key Responsibilities- Develop detailed structured cabling designs for copper and fiber-optic network infrastructure.
- Create floor plans, riser diagrams, rack elevations, pathway layouts, cable schedules, and equipment layouts.
- Design telecommunications rooms (TRs), equipment rooms (ERs), data centers, and network distribution spaces.
- Determine cable routing, pathway requirements, cable counts, termination locations, and equipment placement.
- Produce construction drawings, design packages, specifications, and as-built documentation.
- Review architectural and engineering drawings to identify telecommunications requirements and potential design conflicts.
- Coordinate network cabling designs with electrical, mechanical, architectural, security, audiovisual, and other low-voltage systems.
- Perform site surveys and field verification to validate existing conditions and infrastructure.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards, building codes, and customer requirements, including TIA, BICSI, NEC, and local codes.
- Develop bills of materials (BOMs), cable counts, takeoffs, and material estimates.
- Participate in design reviews and resolve technical issues during the project lifecycle.
- Support installation teams and contractors by providing clarification, revised drawings, and technical guidance.
- Review contractor submittals and installation documentation for compliance with design requirements.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and incorporate field changes into final as-built drawings.
- Communicate effectively with customers, project managers, engineers, vendors, and field personnel.
- 2+ years of experience designing structured cabling or telecommunications infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of copper and fiber-optic cabling systems.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Visio, or similar design/documentation software.
- Understanding of telecommunications pathways, cable trays, conduit, sleeves, racks, cabinets, patch panels, and grounding/bonding requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, and engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with TIA-568, TIA-569, TIA-606, BICSI, NEC, and related telecommunications standards.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical drawings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- BICSI certification such as RCDD, RTPM, or Technician.
- Experience with data center cabling design.
- Experience with fiber-optic backbone and high-density cabling environments.
- Experience with Revit/BIM and coordinated MEP design.
- Knowledge of wireless, security, audiovisual, access control, or other low-voltage systems.
- Experience performing field surveys and documenting existing conditions.
- Familiarity with project management and construction documentation processes.
- Experience preparing estimates, material takeoffs, and bills of materials.

Success in This RoleA successful Network Cabling Designer produces accurate, buildable designs, anticipates installation challenges, communicates effectively with project stakeholders, and ensures that network infrastructure designs meet technical, operational, safety, and code requirements.
