Job description

Kirkwood Electric is a full-service municipal utility dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective power to the homes and businesses that define our community. We proudly purchase our own power from the market โ€“ about 60% from the Prairie State coal power plant in Lively Grove, Illinois, and 40% from diverse sources connected to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) grid. Thisย includes a balanced mix of coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy fromย wind and solar. These investments position Kirkwood Electric as a leader in sustainable, community-driven energy management.

This position is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for the City of Kirkwood's Electric Department, ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric power to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. This position manages the procurement and distribution of wholesale electricity, oversees system maintenance and improvements, and ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Director manages an annual operating budget of approximately $35 million, directs departmental personnel, and works collaboratively with other City departments to advance organizational goals and provide exceptional service to the community. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing 18 employees and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Negotiating wholesale power purchase agreements and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Advising City leadership on rate structures, infrastructure investments, and policy decisions.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Three weeks of vacation annually
  • 11 paid holidays per year
  • One day of sick leave per month
