    Shelter and Community Clinic Veterinarian

    Join us for an exciting opportunity to achieve the positive community impact of a municipal animal shelter while benefiting from the depth of experience and opportunity of the MSPCA! We are looking for a veterinarian to provide skilled veterinary care and oversight for the MSPCA veterinary program operating in partnership with Thomas J O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center (TJO) in Springfield. The veterinarian will work inside TJO in close collaboration with the MSPCA clinic supervisor and TJO team members to assure and maintain the health of the animals in the shelter, providing individual and population level medical care as well as establishing shelter medicine policies and protocols. The veterinarian, working in partnership with MSPCA & TJO leadership, will also help to develop future low-cost veterinary programs for owned pets in the community.

    Some responsibilities to include:

    • Examine, diagnose, and treat animals TJO animals in accordance with shelter and community medicine best practices, MSPCA & TJO policies and protocols, and within budgetary guidelines.
    • Perform surgical procedures on a daily basis including high quality/high volume spay/neuter, dentistry, and various soft tissue and orthopedic procedures.
    • Provide medical and surgical care for owned pets in support of existing MSPCA Community Outreach programs based in Springfield, and as part of future programs supporting low-cost veterinary care for owned pets through TJO.
    • Engage in pathway planning conversations with TJO leadership, acting as a key voice for population and individual animal health and well-being; contribute professional, compassionate, and thoughtful opinions to the euthanasia decision-making process.
    • Act as the veterinarian of record for TJO, holding licensure and providing oversight to meet Federal DEA regulations and the MA Veterinary State Practice Act.

    Compensation: $130,000 – $165,000 annually.

    Who you are: One must have a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, ability to obtain Massachusetts veterinary license, a controlled substance license and a Federal DEA license. We are looking for candidates who have been practicing veterinary medicine for a minimum of 2 years. Experience in shelter medicine or other high-volume setting preferred.
