Archaeological Field Technician (Seasonal / Project-Term)
Located in the North Thompson Valley, Simpcw Resources Group ("SRG") is a fully-owned Indigenous business dedicated to creating sustainable economic opportunities within the Simpcw'ulecw (Simpcw Territory). Simpcw Resources Group is seeking motivated and dependable Archaeological Field Technicians to support archaeological assessment programs for major infrastructure and development projects within Simpcw Territory and surrounding areas.
These are seasonal, project-term positions running until approximately November 2026 and offers valuable hands-on training and field experience working alongside experienced archaeologists and field supervisors.
Fieldwork is based primarily in the North Thompson region, with travel to nearby project sites as required. Work may involve extended field days and rotational schedules. The successful candidate enjoys working outdoors, is comfortable performing physically demanding fieldwork, and is committed to maintaining high standards of safety, professionalism, and environmental stewardship.
Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:
- Strong interest in archaeology, cultural heritage protection, land stewardship, and outdoor fieldwork.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow direction, maintain productivity, and complete repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.
- Ability to work safely and effectively outdoors in varying terrain, weather conditions, and remote locations.
- Physically capable of performing demanding field activities throughout a full workday.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is preferred.
- Standard First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification, is considered an asset.
- Enrollment in, or completion of, a program related to Archaeology, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Previous archaeological, environmental, construction, forestry, or outdoor field experience is considered an asset but is not required.
- Demonstrated respect for Indigenous cultures, heritage resources, and environmental stewardship principles.
Physical Demands of the Role
Candidates must be able to safely perform the essential physical requirements of archaeological fieldwork, including:
- Performing sustained manual labour outdoors for extended periods.
- Lifting, carrying, and moving soil and equipment weighing between 10 and 50 lbs.
- Digging test pits using hand tools and performing repetitive upper-body movements.
- Screening excavated soils using hand-held and stationary screens.
- Repetitive lifting, shaking, bending, kneeling, crouching, squatting, and twisting.
- Walking and working for extended periods on uneven ground, slopes, forested terrain, and unstable surfaces.
- Following safe lifting procedures and established safe work practices at all times.
In this role you will:
- Conduct systematic shovel testing in accordance with approved archaeological methodologies, permit requirements, and project procedures.
- Assist with auger testing programs and support coordination with archaeological staff and equipment operators.
- Screen excavated soils and assist in identifying potential artifacts, cultural materials, and archaeological indicators.
- Accurately collect, record, and manage field data using GPS units, tablets, field forms, photographs, maps, and written field notes.
- Support archaeological site assessments, evaluations, and mitigation activities under the direction of qualified archaeologists.
- Assist with field mobilization, equipment preparation, site setup, access preparation, and demobilization activities.
- Maintain and care for field equipment, tools, and project resources.
- Follow all company health and safety policies, procedures, and project-specific safety requirements.
- Participate in safety orientations, toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and other safety initiatives.
- Apply safe work practices during all field activities and proactively identify, report, and help mitigate workplace hazards.
- Adhere to applicable legislation, permit conditions, archaeological standards, and cultural resource management best practices.
- Work collaboratively with archaeologists, field technicians, supervisors, Indigenous partners, and project stakeholders.
- Conduct yourself professionally and respectfully when interacting with community members, land users, clients, and project representatives.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
