An Emergency Medical Technician is a person qualified as required by Florida State Statute 401 and has a current Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification to provide Basic Life Support medical care and serves on a Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support Ambulance. An Emergency Medical Technician may drive an ALS or BLS unit or serve as the senior Medical Technician on a BLS unit.
3. Vehicle Maintenance Duties as the Driver:
a) Operation of the vehicle in a safe and courteous manner at all times.
b) Perform a maintenance check on the vehicle using the appropriate checklist at the
beginning of each shift.
c) Check the general condition of the vehicle for cleanliness and new damage.
d) Check the levels of oil, radiator fluid, battery, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake
fluid, windshield washer fluid.
e) Check the condition of the belts and hoses and report any correction needed to Fleet
Maintenance and Dispatch.
f) Check tires for proper inflation, general condition, and wear. Report any problems to Fleet
Maintenance and Dispatch.
g) Check all lights (including emergency lights) in the ambulance. Notify Dispatch of any
defective bulbs.
h) Report any other problems to the dispatchers.
i) At the end of the day, with the help of any applicable partner, clean and refuel the unit to
prepare it for immediate use by the next shift.
4. Medical Duties:
a) Assess patient's condition.
b) Take and record vital signs.
c) Provide airway management using Adjuncts as covered in the medical protocols.
d) Administer oxygen as needed.
e) Treat for shock.
f) Provide Basic Life Support care to the patient.
g) Apply appropriate splints and bandages.
h) Use an AED (if equipped).
i) Follow medical protocols.
j) Assure crew and patient safety.
k) Maintain the privacy, confidentiality, and security of all protected health information.
l) Any other duties as assigned by Administration or the Medical Director.
1. Qualifications:
a) Be at least 18 years of age.
b) Hold a current Florida Class E License.
c) Have and maintain a good driving record.
d) Be in generally good physical health.
e) Be free of any mental illness.
f) Be free from addiction to alcohol or drugs.
g) Have a high school diploma, equivalent certification, or a GED.
h) Possess a current American Heart Association BLS Health Care Provider certification.
i) Has completed (from the DHS FEMA Training Website):
i. ICS - 100a, Introduction to Incident Command System.
ii. IS-5a, Introduction to Hazardous Materials.
iii. IS 700, Introduction to National Incident Management System.
iv. IS-800, Introduction to the National Response Plan.
j) Possess a current Certification as a Florida Emergency Medical Technician.
k) Have Documentation of completion of state required 16-hour EVOC course or the
equivalent.
2. Physical Performance Requirements:
a) Ability to lift 150 pounds.
b) Ability to perform significant and prolonged bending and stooping.
c) With the help of a partner, ability to carry a patient weighing 150 - 300 pounds up and
down one (1) flight of stairs on an approved transport device, which may weigh an
additional 75 - 100 pounds.
d) With the help of a partner, ability to load a 300-pound patient into the ambulance on a
stretcher from the foot end.
e) With the help of a partner, ability to raise and lower a standard ambulance stretcher loaded
with a 300-pound patient on it.
