QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

1. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesRequires the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the Activities Programs in accordance with current state, federal, and local standards as well as established policies and procedures; assure that the spiritual development, emotional, recreational and social needs of the residents are met and maintained on an individual basis; ability to read write and communicate effectively in English; position requires frequent bending, stooping, stretching and lifting; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds; requires driving the facility vehicle; requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

2. Education:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university preferred. Activity Director Certification or Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist preferred.

3. Experience: Previous experience as an activity professional in a short term or long-term care setting preferred.

4. Certificate/Licenses: (1) CTRS, ADC, OTR, COTA preferred and (2) a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The employee must be able to perform, including but not limited to, these essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation by the employer, without posing a direct threat to him/her or to others.

JOB DESCRIPTION                                       

  1. Responsible for planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the Activities program.
  2. Develop and maintain a good working rapport with other departments within the facility and outside community agencies to assure that the activities programs can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  3. Assist in the development of, and participation in, regularly scheduled orientation and in-service training programs.
  4. Interview residents/families as necessary to better provide activities to meet needs.  Involve residents’ families in planning activities when possible.
  5. Assist in arranging transportation and escorts for field trips and to other facilities whenever necessary.
  6. Develop and implement a plan of care for each resident based on his/her individual needs.
  7. Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent resident care information to assure residents rights are protected.
  8. Encourage hobbies and crafts and provide materials in keeping with the resident’s financial status and the departmental budget.
  9. Record and maintain Activity progress notes as well as a record of resident participation in activities.
  10. Prepare and post a schedule of activities and keep the Reality Orientation Board up to date.
  11. Organize and maintain a Volunteer Program.
  12. Report any changes in the resident’s condition immediately to the Nursing Department.
  13. Report all accidents/incidents immediately.
  14. Schedule individual, small group and large group activities for each resident that meets their physical, social, emotional, spiritual, diversional and self esteem needs.
  15. Make daily rounds to ensure the well-being of the residents.
  16. Coordinate activities with other departments as necessary.
  17. Develop a facility newsletter and calendar.
  18. Review resident complaints and make necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator.
  19. Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department; be responsible for annual operating budget.
  20. Conduct one-to-one room visits for residents who are unable to attend group activities.
  21. Distribute residents’ mail.
  22. Update department’s policies and procedures manual at least annually.
  23. Practices safe working habits.
  24. Assist in assessing a resident upon admission, and chart resident’s progress.
