Construction Project Manager

Job Description

This is advanced level technical work in functional areas of project administration and management. Employees, under limited supervision, independently manage construction activities on large complex projects (phases) such as Major intersection improvement, widening, reconstruction, diverging diamond, urban interstate resurfacing and complex Bridge Project Or other projects in similar scope/complexity (They help oversee all JCPM’s estimates who may be managing the day-to-day activities on Projects assigned to the CPM).

Employee inspects and supervises lower-level inspectors performing routine to moderately complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials to assure compliance with the construction contract and other applicable guidelines. Work includes monitoring traffic control and erosion control on the project. Work also includes monitoring construction costs; negotiating prices for contract modifications with contractors; writing or supervising the preparation of reports and correspondence; and working and communicating with contractors, supervisors, subordinates, local officials, media and the general public. Work may also include participating in Concept Meetings, Field Plan (Preliminary and/or Final) and CPM schedule reviews.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of specifications and standards, acceptable construction practices, materials, methods and equipment used in highway construction and engineering. Thorough knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations related to highway transportation engineering. Ability to read and comprehend construction plans and all other documents associated with the project. Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles in accordance with Georgia Law.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements

Registered in State of Georgia as a Professional Engineer (or if registered in another state, must obtain registration in Georgia within six (6) months) and four (4) years of progressive transportation technician experience as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency; or degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology (4 year curriculum) or Construction Management (4 year curriculum) and Four (4) years of progressive transportation technician experience as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency; or degree in Civil Engineering Technology (2 year curriculum) or Construction Management (2 year curriculum) and five (5) years of progressive transportation technician experience as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency; or High School Diploma or GED and eight (8) years of progressive transportation technician experience as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.

Certifications

Degreed Employee

  1. GDOT Worksite Erosion Control Supervisor (WECS).
  2. GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification.
  3. GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control).
  4. Completion of Project Management Training Program equivalent to GDOT Project Engineer’s Academy or demonstrated experience managing projects similar in size and complexity.

Non-Degreed Employee

  1. Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 1 (General Provisions, Auxiliary Items, Basic Highway Math, and Basic Highway Plan Reading).
  2. Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 2 (Pavements, Bases and Subbases, Minor Drainage Structures, Construction Erosion Control).
  3. Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 3 (Earthwork, Bridges, Incidental Items.
  4. GDOT WECS.
  5. GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification.
  6. GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control).
  7. Completion of Project Management Training Program equivalent to GDOT Project Engineer’s Academy or demonstrated experience managing projects similar in size and complexity.

Certifications from other agencies or states may possibly be substituted.
