Title: Junior R&D/TS&D Technician; Mechanical Tech Focus
Location: Midland, MI
Schedule:Â 5 days a week, 8 hours a day onsite (might flex to 4x10 after ramp up period)
The role will focus on maintenance of mechanical equipment such as pumps. This includes preventative maintenance activities and repair of vacuum pumps, booster pumps, and other mechanical systems in an R&D lab environment. Mechanical skills such as small engine repair or experience with vacuum pumps would be highly applicable. Attention to safety and following procedures is also required.
Tech provides basic technical support to Lead Scientists and Technologist Leaders in the preparation and execution of experimental activities and studies. Uses existing procedures to provide technical support for product development, application development, technical service, and or product or process research.
In this role, you will be using standard operating procedures to complete well-defined activities to develop the technical skills required to perform routine tasks. You will need to understand how these assigned tasks relate to other jobs and be able to exchange information in routine situations within your workgroup.
It is your responsibility to use existing procedures to resolve straightforward problems with limited opportunities to independently modify procedures or work processes. You are accountable for managing your assigned tasks and the accuracy of your own work. You will receive close to moderate level of supervision and guidance in this role.
Responsibilities /Duties
• Maintain and repair a fleet of 200+ vacuum pumps
• Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, inspections)
• Disassemble, rebuild, and reassemble pumps using repair kits
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues and restore equipment performance
• Maintain spare parts inventory and support equipment standardization efforts
Lab Support Responsibilities (Secondary)
• Perform routine instrument maintenance (e.g., nitrogen fills, solvent refills)
• Assist with basic calibration and upkeep of lab equipment
• Follow SOPs for lab processes and safety protocols
• Support ongoing R&D operations as needed
Administrative / Organizational
• Track equipment inventory using spreadsheets (Excel-based tracking)
• Maintain logs for maintenance, repairs, and preventative tasks
• Help streamline inventory and reduce equipment variability
Qualifications
·      A High School diploma (or equivalent)
·      Experience with previous pump disassembly, rebuilds, and reassembly
·       Troubleshoot mechanical issues and restore equipment performance
·      Experience with SOPs
·      Experience with Tracking using Excel
·      Lab environment experience highly preferred
