Position Summary:Under the supervision of the County Administrator, this position is responsible for the proper, professional and efficient operation of the department which includes career and reserve functions. Job responsibilities are primarily administrative and supervisory including but not limited to operations, training, safety and education. This is a salaried position with customary office hours; employee shall be responsible for responding to after-hours emergencies as requested. The employee in this position must be a resident of Ford County and maintain all qualifications of a Ford County Firefighter/Paramedic.

Essential Functions Statement(s)
- Must supervise, regulate and manage all department activities;
- Ensure all staff are properly qualified and trained to respond to any type of emergency assigned whether it is Fire or Medical;
- Supervise and coordinate hazardous materials responses and preparedness with other departments;
- Draft and present department budget to the County Administrator;
- Make purchasing decisions according to established Ford County Purchasing Policy;
- Develop equipment specifications and submit them to County Administrator for bid process according to policy and procedures;
- Have knowledge and understanding of long-term goals and objectives for the department;
- Provide a written report to County Commissioners when requested and attend meetings as needed;
- Address questions, concerns and complaints from the general public;
- Work with the Human Resource department to meet staffing needs including the hiring, discipline and termination of subordinate personnel;
- Oversee Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Program for department;
- Ability to safely operate all vehicles and equipment assigned to any staff member at any station;
- Provide public education or relations presentation or events as necessary or assigned.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serve on committees and/or task forces;
- Other related duties as necessary or required.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 18 years of age;
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.;
Pass a pre-employment drug screen and health assessment;
Pass a criminal background check;
Valid Kansas recognized Paramedic certification;
Firefighter II certification;
Possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License; Commercial Driver's License preferred.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Experience: Five years' experience providing full service public safety functions at an officer's rank or management equivalent.
Education: Bachelor's degree in fire service administration or emergency services administration or a related field of study is preferred. Job experience may be used to meet educational requirement.
Skills: Ability to lift and or drag 180 pounds and meet department hiring test guidelines and maintain same skill set as Career staff paramedics.
Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position. Must be able to follow protocol and work through a variety of scenarios under extremely stressful conditions.
Decision Making: Decision making is required in all aspects of this position to determine the best method of patient care and compliance with Standard Operating Procedure and medical protocol and state and local laws.
Accountability: Employee is responsible for budgetary control of the department and does participate in the annual budget process.
Supervision: Supervision and control of all departmental staff and activities.
Personal Relations: Strong interpersonal skills are required. Contact with public, County Departments, other agencies and entities is expected.
Working Conditions: This position involves work both indoors and outdoors year-round in varying weather and extreme exigent conditions. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as ear protection, and safety glasses.
