About Compost Power
Compost Power (CP) is a community-based composting non-profit in NYC dedicated to turning food waste into healthy soil. We partner with NYCHA communities to build sustainable, local composting systems that promote environmental justice, food sovereignty, and community empowerment. Compost Power currently supports 9 small-scale compost sites in NYCHA developments and operates a medium scale site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
We’re expanding! After 5 successful years, Compost Power is partnering with Green City Force, a NYC-based non-profit organization, to create a strong foundation for our growing operations. We’re looking for highly motivated individuals to join our team and help us build the future of our organization.
Position Summary
The Senior Finance & Administration Manager will play a critical role in supporting the CEO and leadership team by overseeing financial management, human resources, and organizational operations. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented and proactive professional who thrives in a mission-driven environment and is eager to help scale a growing social enterprise.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
Finance & Administration
- Manage day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable/receivable, expense tracking, and reconciliations.
- Support budget development, forecasting, and financial reporting for the CEO.
- Coordinate with external accountants and auditors to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal requirements.
- Assist with grant management, invoicing, and financial documentation for funders and partners.
Human Resources
- Lead and develop Compost Power’s onboarding and offboarding process; personnel file keeping, including drafting offer and exit letters, conducting welcome orientation and training.
- Oversee benefits administration and tracking systems, run open enrollment, research and resolve staff benefit issues and implement updates and additions to staff benefit plans.
- Support in the development of Compost Power’s policy and procedures, including safety protocols, and ensure all materials and official communication are compliant and up-to-date.
- Consult with CEO to resolve employee performance or disciplinary actions and coordinate logistics of employee follow up
- Support hiring and recruitment efforts for staff directly employed by Compost Power and staff Compost Power oversees with partner organizations. This may include drafting job descriptions, posting on various job sites, etc Ensures staff participation in annual training and development is compliant with all city, state and federal regulations i.e. sexual harassment prevention training
- Help build organizational culture, supporting staff development and workplace equity.
Operations
- Assist with drafting and reviewing internal and external communicationsBuild and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Support with special projects that advance Compost Power’s mission and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 2-4 years of experience in Finance, HR, or operations, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven business.
- Strong knowledge of bookkeeping, payroll systems, and HR practices.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including Google Suite, HRIS and payroll platforms, and Microsoft Word and Excel
- Commitment to Compost Power’s mission of sustainability, community empowerment, and environmental justice.
- Familiarity with NYC communities and/or NYCHA partnerships is a strong plus.
