Child and Youth Care Worker (Permanent Part-Time) Vancouver Family Preservation and Reunification Competition #14-26
About the Role
At Family Services of Greater Vancouver, we’ve been helping people in crisis since 1928. As a non-profit, we help people develop skills and knowledge, empowering our neighbours to create positive change in their lives. Our team is made up of more than 420 staff, including expert counsellors and support workers who provide compassionate, client-centred care to youth experiencing homelessness, families and children impacted by trauma, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable people from an evidence-based, trauma-informed lens. We believe in building a brighter future for all British Columbians and providing a supportive and inclusive workplace for all our staff.
The Child amp; Youth Worker provides one-to-one and group support to children and youth from 7-15 years of age who may experience mental, emotional and behavioural challenges. The Child amp; Youth Worker formulates goals, action plans and strategies together with clients and their caregivers. Through community-based recreational activities, the Child amp; Youth Worker supports clients, using coaching, modelling and supportive counselling, to develop life skills, age-appropriate independence, self-confidence and social responsibility. The Child amp; Youth Worker will connect with Family Preservation Counsellors, MCFD Social Workers, educational staff and families as part of an integrated team. As Family Preservation and Reunification Services is a gated program, this position responds to referrals from the MCFD, where child protection concerns have been identified.

Availability from 2-7 pm is required during the school calendar year. There is flexibility during the summer school break.
Salary: GS 9 Step1 $28.81 per hour

What do you need to succeed?
Education, Training, Experience
  • Completed or working towards a Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, or a completed 2-year diploma in Child and Youth Care in combination with training and experience
  • Two years’ experience working with children and youth who have been impacted by family stressors, mental health, and/or supporting children and youth with lower support needs
Role Qualifications amp; Skills Include, but are not limited to
  • Work with children and youth who have been impacted by family crisis, such as domestic violence, family breakdown, foster placement, or parental incapacity
  • Support children and youth who may be neurodivergent or have developmental delays
  • Utilize modelling, coaching and supportive counselling to assist children and youth through transitions, emotional dysregulation, and impulsive behaviours
  • Plan, implement and evaluate service goals and outcomes in partnership with clients, their caregivers, Family Preservation Counsellors and/or MCFD Social Workers
  • Ability to identify health and safety issues for children and youth and take the appropriate actions
  • Knowledge of child development, transitional themes, and family dynamics
  • Knowledge of Child Protection laws, regulations and concerns which may be attached to criminal investigations, police involvement, court orders, or probation
