JOB ANNOUNCEMENT 

TRAFFIC SIGNAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT 

Summary: Inspect, maintain, repair, and verify the proper operation of traffic signals, street lights, and roadway pavement  markings in accordance with City policies and specifications. Traffic Signals: Repair work includes installation of all related signal  parts, cameras, cables, wires, conduit, pull boxes, electrical conductors, mounting hardware, signal controller cabinets, and  associated signal equipment. Perform complex troubleshooting and repair of systems and related equipment. Respond to  malfunctions; inspect repairs on existing signals, and assist in the inspection of new installations. Meet with local and state officials,  and utility companies to resolve issues, and works closely with private contractors. Conduct span pole and mast arm inspections.  Demonstrate proficiency in diagnosing signal timing issues and troubleshooting system problems. Perform preventative  maintenance, repairs, and inspections of City-maintained traffic signals and traffic control devices, including cleaning and painting  of equipment. Collect and coordinate traffic and pedestrian counts. Program signal timings and perform electrical and electronic  wiring of signal cabinets, heads, and sensors. Coordinate placements with the Bristol Police Department and Legal Traffic  Authority. Maintain inventory of traffic equipment. Street Lights: Street light repair work includes the installation and repair of  street lights, interconnect cable, photocells, pull boxes, electrical conductors, mounting hardware, and associated equipment.  Coordinate with utility companies to ensure timely completion of work, including the removal of double utility poles. Maintain  inventory of equipment, and utility work orders and data associated with the repair of street lights and removal of double poles.  Utilize aerial lift trucks and related equipment to perform repairs and maintenance. Street Pavement: Performs pavement  marking; inspect conditions, prepare work orders, coordinate marking revisions with the Bristol Police Department and Legal Traffic  Authority, and oversee installation in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) requirements. Prepare  purchase orders for tools, equipment and supplies; review and approve contractor invoices. Maintain accurate and up-to-date  work order logs. Install and remove traffic barricades and cones associated with special events within City streets. Other Duties: May perform duties of the DPW Engineering Division Highway Inspector, Excavation Inspector, Environmental Technician and/or  Construction Inspector as needed. This position may exercise limited supervisory responsibilities while directing work. 

Qualifications: Requires High School Diploma or GED; 3 years of experience in traffic signal maintenance or a related field;  or an equivalent combination of education and experience; basic knowledge of Internet and word processing software; and  intermediate knowledge of traffic system software. 

Licenses or Certifications: Requires a valid State of CT Electrician License (E1), and valid CT Drivers License. Must obtain  (within three months of employment) and maintain Traffic Signal Technician I and Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician  certifications from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA). Traffic Signal Technician II and/or Senior Field  Technician III certification preferred. 

Physical Demands & Work Environment: Regularly required to talk, hear, and stand. Frequent activities include stooping,  kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching. Occasional activities include sitting, climbing, balancing, and/or sense of smell. Work  is classified as light to medium duty, requiring exertion of 2550 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds frequently.  Requires mental acuity, sound judgment, clear verbal communication, and close visual attention. The employee is frequently  exposed to outdoor weather conditions, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, electrical hazards, vibration, and  airborne particles. Occasional indoor or office work may be required. 

Classification & Work Schedule: Full time benefited position, 37 hours per week. Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 8:00  a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with hour unpaid lunch period, and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with no lunch period. 

Benefits include Defined Benefit Pension Plan, generous time off (personal days, perfect attendance days, vacation, accrued sick  leave, including 13 full day & 2 half day holidays) & insurance package (medical, dental, vision care, prescriptions, life, and short term disability). 

Salary: $40.79/hr. Increase to $44.68 @6 months, $45.46 @1 year.
