Hourly Pay Range per District: 

  • Burton School District - $20.00
  • Porterville Unified School District - $20.00
  • Substitute Position* - $18.00

**Note: If you have fewer than five day availability (Monday-Friday), your application will be considered for a substitute tutor position. Substitute tutors are placed on an on-call basis according to the schedule preferences indicated on your application. **

What it’s like to be a Teaching Fellow: 

As a Teaching Fellow, you’ll work directly with students in expanded learning programs. Tutoring, guiding, and supporting young learners through hands-on activities while ensuring a safe, structured, and positive environment for every student in your classroom. 

The Opportunity: 

Adhere to Teaching Fellows Day and Morning Program Outline:

  • Shadow master teacher or administrator.
  • Tutor students in group and individual settings with their homework.
  • Provide pre-scheduled educational activities for enrichment.
  • Deliver structured learning activities for academic components.
  • Enforce behavioral rules and procedures to maintain order. 
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and behavior.
  • Ensure equipment and materials are used properly.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students.

Communication & Safety

  • Foster good communication with fellow tutors, teachers, and with the California Teaching Fellows Foundation.
  • Collaborate with other tutors on lesson planning and program goals.
  • Ensure student safety and supervise all of their activities.
  • Follow emergency procedures set forth by Teaching Fellows and/or school districts.
  • Report any incidents promptly to the site lead, school administration, or local authorities.

Perform Other Duties as Assigned

  • Attend monthly staff meetings (Teaching Fellow Academies) once a month and training as scheduled
  • Offer opinions and suggestions on program decisions.
  • Adhere to any directives given by site lead, assistant site lead, or liaison.

Qualifications & Minimum Requirements:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Have obtained a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Authorization to work in the United States 
  • Completion of 48 college units or passage of an approved exam, if applicable, to meet the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements.
  • Proficiency in the English language, including spelling, grammar, and composition; ability to speak multiple languages is recognized as beneficial but not required. 
  • General understanding of educational standards and the public school system.
  • Willingness to undergo background checks and Tuberculosis exam
