Job description

Medicare Advantage Insurance Broker — Description

A Medicare Advantage (MA) Insurance Broker is a licensed insurance professional who helps Medicare-eligible individuals understand, compare, and enroll in Medicare Advantage plans that may best fit their healthcare needs, financial situation, and personal preferences.

Primary Role

The broker acts as a professional resource and advisor, helping beneficiaries navigate Medicare Advantage options while following Medicare, carrier, and agency compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Educate beneficiaries about Medicare Advantage and how it differs from Original Medicare.
  • Assess client needs, including doctors, hospitals, prescription medications, specialists, benefits, premiums, copays, and geographic availability.
  • Compare available Medicare Advantage plans from the insurance carriers the broker is authorized to represent.
  • Explain plan benefits and costs accurately and in a manner the beneficiary can understand.
  • Verify provider and prescription information when appropriate and using available carrier resources.
  • Assist with enrollment when the beneficiary decides to apply for a plan.
  • Follow Medicare marketing and enrollment regulations, carrier policies, and agency procedures.
  • Document client interactions and enrollments according to compliance requirements.
  • Protect beneficiary information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide appropriate follow-up service after enrollment, while understanding the distinction between sales, service, and agency responsibilities.
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, annual training, and carrier appointments.

Team-Oriented Role Within an Agency

A Medicare Advantage broker should work as part of the agency team rather than operating independently of established procedures. The broker should:

  • Respect the agency’s leadership and operational structure.
  • Communicate effectively with LOAs, administrative staff, and other brokers.
  • Follow established lead, appointment, CRM, documentation, and compliance procedures.
  • Avoid making commitments or representations on behalf of the agency without authorization.
  • Share information and best practices that help the entire team succeed.
  • Refer administrative, enrollment, carrier, or compliance issues to the appropriate team member when necessary.

Professional Standards

A successful Medicare Advantage broker should demonstrate:

Integrity • Compliance • Accuracy • Professionalism • Accountability • Customer Service • Teamwork • Product Knowledge

The broker’s objective should not simply be to make a sale, but to help the beneficiary make an informed decision while maintaining the highest standards of ethical and regulatory conduct.
