Job Description – Pipelayer

Position Summary

The Pipelayer is responsible for installing underground utility piping systems, including storm drains, sanitary sewers, and water mains. This role involves laying and joining concrete, PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, and cast-iron pipe while ensuring proper line and grade according to project specifications. The Pipelayer prepares trenches, rigs and guides pipe during installation, and works closely with equipment operators to safely and efficiently complete underground utility projects.

This position requires physical labor, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to assist other crew members and trades as needed to ensure successful project completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install underground pipe for storm, sewer, and water utility systems.
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and utility plans.
  • Prepare, grade, and clean trenches for pipe installation.
  • Rig pipe and guide materials safely during lifting and placement.
  • Set pipe to proper line and grade using lasers, levels, or other grade-control equipment.
  • Assemble and seal pipe joints according to manufacturer and project specifications.
  • Install fittings, valves, manholes, catch basins, and related utility structures.
  • Backfill and compact trenches following project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with equipment operators using hand signals and radios.
  • Inspect installed pipe for alignment, grade, and proper connections.
  • Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies at all times.
  • Perform general labor duties and assist other trades and crew members as needed.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean, organized work area.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in underground utility pipelaying.
  • Experience installing water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.
  • Ability to read grade stakes and understand line and grade requirements.
  • Knowledge of trench safety and excavation practices.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform strenuous physical labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to job sites.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and all applicable pre-employment screenings.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working around GPS-controlled excavation equipment.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Confined Space Certification.
  • Competent Person (Excavation) certification.
  • Experience installing ductile iron, HDPE, and restrained joint pipe.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Experience working on municipal or commercial underground utility projects.
  • Ability to operate small equipment such as compactors, pumps, or skid steers.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Work in trenches, uneven terrain, mud, and confined spaces.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, squat, and climb throughout the workday.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
