Lead Automation Mechanical Design Engineer
Imagine starting your day by opening a new SolidWorks assembly for a robotic workcell you’ve been shaping with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, Machine Builders, Machining/Fabrication specialists, and fellow Mechanical Engineers at Axis. By lunch, you’re reviewing GD&T callouts for a precision tooling fixture, and in the afternoon you’re walking through a safety-focused design review with a customer, supplier, and our internal team. Before you sign off, you sync with leadership on project updates and mentor a junior designer on best practices.
What you’ll do
- Translate requirements into robust 3D designs for automated equipment, layouts, and subassemblies in SolidWorks.
- Lead and manage assigned projects (including mid-scale initiatives), guiding cross-functional project teams to deliver on scope, schedule, and quality.
- Apply GD&T and Datum schemes to create accurate tooling and fixture designs.
- Design using NAAMS standard components and proven design approaches.
- Engineer systems that comply with customer specifications, Axis Automation build standards, and current safety guidelines.
- Present mechanical concepts and detailed designs to internal stakeholders, customers, and suppliers; lead formal design reviews.
- Consult closely with Process/Cost Engineers to align technical choices with manufacturability and cost targets.
- Assess customer-supplied CAD models, verifying data levels and revision accuracy.
- Maintain timely, transparent communication with Axis management and project teams as developments occur.
- Build strong customer relationships; manage requests and changes professionally.
- Source and specify major purchased components through vendor engagement.
- Coach and train less-experienced Mechanical Design Engineers and Co-Ops/Interns.
- Create, refine, and document department standards, methods, and procedures.
- Support build and assembly teams through integration, test, and validation.
- Actively live Axis Automation’s ten Operating Principles in daily decisions and teamwork.
