ABC NorCal is looking for a dynamic, outgoing and results-driven Director of Membership & Business Development to lead our membership growth and retention efforts throughout Northern California.

The ideal candidate is a strong relationship builder with proven business development or consultative sales experience who can connect with contractors and business leaders, understand their needs and demonstrate the value of ABC NorCal membership.

You do not need previous association or nonprofit experience to be successful in this role. Experience in construction, B2B sales, business development, account management or another relationship-driven industry is highly valued.

This position reports directly to the President & CEO and plays an important leadership role in the continued growth of ABC NorCal.

What You'll Do

• Develop and execute strategies to recruit new members and retain existing members.
• Build and maintain an active pipeline of prospective members throughout Northern California.
• Meet with contractors and business leaders to understand their needs and communicate the value of ABC NorCal membership.
• Develop new relationships, nurture existing relationships and turn prospects into long-term members.
• Conduct regular member visits to strengthen engagement, identify needs and support retention.
• Develop lead-generation and outreach strategies using industry relationships, construction markets, business publications and other resources.
• Partner with leadership, marketing and events to develop programs, benefits and opportunities that provide value to members.
• Lead membership recruitment campaigns, retention initiatives, new-member orientations and other membership programs.
• Coordinate and support the Membership Committee and other volunteer leaders.
• Maintain accurate prospect and member activity in the organization's CRM.
• Establish annual membership recruitment and retention goals and track results.
• Manage the membership recruitment and retention budget.
• Represent ABC NorCal at networking events, industry meetings, chapter programs and community events.
• Provide regular membership activity and performance updates to the President & CEO.

• Have 5+ years of successful business development, sales, membership development, account management or relationship-management experience.
• Have a demonstrated ability to generate leads, develop relationships and close new business.
• Are comfortable initiating conversations and developing relationships with business owners and executives.
• Understand consultative selling and how to uncover a prospect's business needs.
• Are outgoing, energetic and comfortable networking and representing an organization.
• Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Are organized, self-motivated and able to manage a territory and pipeline.
• Enjoy being part of a team while also taking ownership of individual goals.
• Have strong business acumen and a commitment to excellent customer service.
• Are comfortable using CRM systems and tracking outreach and results.

Construction industry experience or an established network within the Northern California construction/business community is highly desirable.

Association or nonprofit membership development experience is a plus, but not required.

A bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, public affairs or a related field is preferred. Equivalent relevant professional experience may also be considered.

About the Position

This is a relationship-driven position that requires regular travel throughout ABC NorCal's Northern California territory to meet with members and prospective members.

Occasional evening, weekend and overnight travel is required for chapter events, networking opportunities and industry activities. The position also attends one national conference annually..

How we got our start
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) was founded in 1950 when seven contractors gathered in Baltimore, MD to create an association based on the shared belief that construction projects should be awarded on merit to the most qualified and responsible low bidders. The courage and dedication of those seven contractors – Charles Mullan, C.K. Wells, Jr., Philip Cloves, Ernest Shultz, Edward Colwill, Charles Knott and Edward Dickinson – helped quickly spread the merit shop philosophy and ABC became the fastest growing association in the United States.

Where we are now
Today, ABC is a national trade association with 68 Chapters and 22,000 members representing more than 19,000 construction and industry-related firms. We are the VOICE OF THE MERIT SHOP® and the only organization to serve contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and associates of all trades who want to conduct business in an unrestricted market regardless of labor affiliation. Our services include federal, state and local government representation, legal advocacy, education, workforce development, communications, technology, recognition through national and chapter awards programs, employee benefits and information on best practices and business development.

ABC Northern California’s history
ABC Northern California (ABC NorCal) was founded in 1976 in Concord, CA. In summer 2008, we expanded our office and training space and moved to our current 26,000 square-foot home in Livermore, CA. Today we represent close to 500 large and small companies across Northern California and train 300+ apprentices per year.
