Job description

Pharmacist Position at Akicita Federal

Akicita Federal is hiring Pharmacists to deliver essential pharmaceutical care to Navajo Nation members and surrounding communities through the Indian Health Service's Gallup Service Unit in Gallup, NM. You will work at the Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC) — one of the busiest hospitals in the entire Indian Health Service system — and at the Tohatchi Health Center, directly supporting a patient population that depends on this care. This is meaningful, high-impact work in a setting where your clinical expertise makes a real difference every single day.

Responsibilities include:

  • Screen, verify, and dispense inpatient and outpatient prescription orders in compliance with federal law and IHS pharmacy standards
  • Counsel patients on medication use, side effects, adherence, and safe storage to support informed, effective self-care
  • Review medication orders for clinical accuracy, drug interactions, therapeutic duplications, and dosage appropriateness
  • Provide drug information support to physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff across internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, emergency medicine, and surgical departments
  • Manage pharmaceutical inventory, controlled substance accountability, and supply chain integrity within the pharmacy department
  • Participate in quality assurance and pharmacy improvement initiatives to maintain compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and CMS standards
  • Support primary care clinical protocols and collaborative care activities as directed by pharmacy leadership at the assigned facility

Salary: $156,000 - $166,400 a year

Requirements:

  • Active, unrestricted Pharmacist license valid for practice in New Mexico (or eligibility to obtain prior to start)
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or equivalent degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Ability to provide both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services in a hospital or health center environment
  • Working knowledge of federal pharmacy regulations, controlled substance requirements, and applicable pharmacy practice standards
  • Familiarity with TJC and CMS pharmacy compliance requirements
  • Ability to perform at multiple facility locations within the Gallup, NM service area (GIMC and Tohatchi Health Center)

What sets candidates apart:

  • Prior experience practicing pharmacy in an Indian Health Service, tribal, or federally qualified health center setting
  • Experience in a high-volume hospital or critical access hospital pharmacy environment
  • Familiarity with the Navajo Nation, Southwest rural health care delivery, or underserved community health contexts
  • Board certification through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) in any relevant specialty (e.g., BCPS, BCACP, BCPPS)
  • Experience supporting collaborative drug therapy management or primary care pharmacy protocols
