Job description
Description:
APCO has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Business Development Engineer in our control and automation consulting firm. We are looking for candidates who are self-driven, problem solvers, and able to work effectively with others. The successful candidate will serve as a bridge between our clients and our engineering staff — working with existing and potential clients to understand specific project needs, developing scopes of work in collaboration with those organizations and our internal engineering staff, and preparing proposals and pricing in accordance with those scopes of work. This role is well suited to someone with a technical or engineering background who enjoys client interaction, writes well, and thinks strategically about how we pursue and present our work. The selected candidate will work as part of our business development group and will have a meaningful opportunity to shape how APCO approaches proposals as the company continues to grow.
Job Functions:
- Collaborate with clients, potential clients, and internal engineering staff to develop clear, well-defined scopes of work that reflect what the client actually needs and what APCO will deliver.
- Prepare proposals and pricing in accordance with the developed scopes of work, and coordinate internal review prior to submission.
- Interpret client specifications, bid documents, and requests for proposal, and determine how APCO can best respond to them.
- Think strategically about our approach to proposals — which pursuits we chase, how we position our capabilities, and how we price and present our work.
- Continuously improve APCO’s proposal standards, templates, and reusable content to raise the quality and consistency of our submittals.
- Coordinate with control engineers, software developers, CAD technicians, and electricians to confirm technical approach, level of effort, and schedule.
- Track opportunities, proposals, and outcomes in APCO’s CRM, and report on pipeline status, win/loss results, and lessons learned.
- Work with the business development group, including marketing and sales staff, on client outreach material, project highlights, and conference and event content.
- Support contract review and negotiation, and hand off awarded work cleanly to the project team.
- Build and maintain relationships with existing and potential clients to understand their operations, challenges, capital plans, and upcoming project needs.
- Represent APCO professionally with clients, vendors, and industry partners.
- Willingness to travel; Most projects take place along the Wasatch Front, but some projects may require travel.
Desirable Skills and Experience (experience expected in some subset of the following):
· BS or MS in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university preferred (equivalent technical experience considered)
· 2+ years of experience in engineering, technical sales, estimating, or proposal development in a related industry preferred (water/wastewater, refining, mining, manufacturing, chemical processing, oil and gas)
· Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to translate technical detail into clear, well-organized, and persuasive proposal language
· Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills; comfortable leading client meetings, site walkdowns, and presentations
· Demonstrated strategic thinking regarding pursuit selection, positioning, and pricing approach
· Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
· Familiarity with industrial control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA, HMI) and the engineering services associated with them
· Experience developing scopes of work, estimates, or cost models for engineering projects
· Experience with CRM tools and proposal or document management workflows
· Ability to manage several concurrent pursuits and consistently meet submission deadlines
Compensation:
· Annual salary and bonus commensurate with experience and background
· Vacation, paid holidays and class leading benefits package
