Job Description

CHIEF NURSING OFFICER

Schedule: Full time

Position Summary: Reporting directly to the President/Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer will be responsible for strategic oversight and operational performance for patient care services. Providing leadership, guidance and direction, the CNO will be responsible to develop, assess, plan, implement and organizational mission, vision and goals are met. Create innovative solutions that lead to high-quality patient outcomes, motivate employees and drive our mission of providing the highest quality in care.

Essential Functions:

In cooperation with the Chief Executive Officer and fellow Senior Administrative Team, develops and administers organizational goals, objectives,policies and procedures.
Assists Directors and Managers in the development and implementation of departmental goals, budgets, policies, procedures, and priorities. Monitors activities relating to the Directors and Managers area(s) of responsibility.
Provides supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies, procedures, applicable laws, and regulations
Takes administrative actions in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, applicable laws, and regulations on personnel who fail to comply with organizational policies and procedures.
Responsible for interviewing, participation with hiring process, and ensure the training of employees directly reporting to the CNO.
Addresses patient, family, and staff complaints and identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; may develop alternative solutions and uses reason when dealing with emotional topics and or situations.
Develops organization wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients' nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated, and met.
Provide recommendations, assistance and oversight in the development and implementation of effective nursing services.
Recommend safe and cost-effective nursing staffing patterns.
Participate with the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical leaders in the organization's decision-making structures and processes.
Implement an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
Participate in strategic planning and quality initiatives with the governing body.
Identify areas of risk/liability.
Ensure staff is educated on risk management and compliance issues.
Develop systems which encourage/require prompt reporting of potential liability by staff at all levels.

FINANCIAL

Reviews and analyzes departmental activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine organizational or departmental financial progress toward stated goals and objectives.
Monitors departmental budgets and makes recommendations to Directors and Managers on changes required to meet organizational and departmental financial goals and objectives
Manage financial resources by developing business plans.
Establish procedures to assure accurate charging mechanisms.
Educate patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.

PATIENT CARE

Develops an effective, ongoing program to measure, analyze, and improve the quality of patient care, treatment, and services.
Implements organization-wide plans to provide patient care, treatment, and services.
Confers with Directors, Managers, and staff on barriers to providing professional patient care, treatment, and services.
Makes periodic rounds of patient care units.
Promotes cooperative working relationships with other hospitals and community agencies, and with other departments.
Promotes team communication among the interdisciplinary team.
Represents the hospital before various civic, professional, educational, and business groups to discuss, market, interpret, and explain policies and programs; and to foster good public relations.
Maintain knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of patient care team members.
Maintain current knowledge of patient care delivery systems and innovations.
Serve as change agent when patient care work/workflow is redesigned.
Support a non-punitive reporting environment and a reward system for reporting unsafe practices.
Ensure staff is clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety.
Define metrics as related to process improvement.
Articulate the link between organization metrics and national quality initiative/metrics.
Builds a framework for professional development by fostering a culture of growth and mentorship.
