A big pickup in hiring is thought to be just around the corner. Bearing this in mind, it’s important for job seekers to be up-to-date with the current trends in job search. By incorporating these strategies into your quest for a new job, you stand a better chance of being noticed by employers and securing the job of your dreams.

Emphasize Specialized Skills

Many companies are no longer interested in generalists — people capable of filling in on a number of different jobs. Instead, they want specialists — people who can help resolve a specific problem.

To account for this shift in hiring practices, emphasize your specialized skills on your resume. Take a look at leading recruitment sites to see what skills in your industry are being asked for most, and highlight them when applying. Try to make points on your resume more specific and thematic. The more details you can offer about your experience, the better. Finally, don’t forget to tailor your resume to each position you apply to, as this will allow you to highlight specific skills that are pertinent to a given job opening.

Get on LinkedIn (& Other Sites)

If you don’t already have a LinkedIn account, get one. These days some employers don’t even want to see your resume; they want a link to your LinkedIn account so they can peruse not only your work experience (does it include management?) and your education (what years did you get your online college degree?), but also your recommendations (who has endorsed you for what?).

Make sure you’ve updated your profile recently and that it provides a real look at who you are and what you bring to a job. Be active on the site by sharing articles or commentary, which will give your profile a fresh, active appearance.

As those LinkedIn recommendations underline, it matters a lot what people have to say about you. Employers will go to the internet to research your reputation, so you’d be smart to discover what such a search turns up; if there’s any way to turn the crowd in your favor, get on it. Also, remember that if nothing shows up when you search for your name, it could be a cause for alarm – your potential employer might think you don’t understand the internet or have never done anything online, so make sure you have an online presence.

Increasingly, people are using social media to put the word out about open jobs and get resumes. Remember that when you network. Be sure to get contacts’ Twitter handles and add them on LinkedIn so you can stay in the loop. If your dream company has a new position, LinkedIn may be one of the first places they look, so already being connected gives you a leg up.

Make a Video Resume

You have a resume and a cover letter, but do you have your own video? Many people began making these as a way to stand out from the crowd, but now in some creative pursuits it’s become an expected part of the job search. For instance, if you are eying a job in video editing or anything that involves a lot of speaking, a video resume can show the employer how skilled you are right off the bat. So long as your video resume is professional, tasteful, and smart, it can be a great opportunity to really sell yourself to the camera.

With that being said, if you are not going into a field where speaking or video are involved (or if you’re not good at speaking or on camera), then you should give pause before moving forward with this idea. Just as a great video resume can have a positive effect on your job prospects, so too can a bad video have a negative effect.
