Sure, maybe science says that bears hibernate in the winter due to a severe lack of food supply. But, if you ask me, they probably choose a few months of solid sleep simply because they know it’s nearly impossible to be productive during the bleak winter months.
Unfortunately, we aren’t as fortunate to be able to dedicate several months to a state of constant sleepiness. So, we need to find a few methods and tactics that help us to actually get things done during the winter. That productivity isn’t always easy to come by, so I’ve rounded up a few tips that will help you continue tackling your to-do list—even when the weather tempts you to hibernate.
1. Stay Active
I know that it’s definitely easier to stay physically active in the warmer months, when you actually want to spend time outdoors. But, maintaining healthy habits and physical activity is equally important in the winter—even though it’s tougher to convince yourself to actually get outside.
As difficult as it may seem, make an effort to get up and stay active in the winter. Pick up a winter sport such as snowshoeing or cross country skiing so that you can enjoy the fresh air and limited sunshine. Or, join a gym or purchase some exercise equipment so that you can get your heartrate up while indoors. Whatever works best for you is fine, as long as you’re getting some exercise in. It will help to relieve stress and shake those winter blues—helping to make you more focused and productive.
2. Set Goals
Everybody knows about New Year resolutions—even if you’ve never managed to keep one. But, don’t trick yourself into thinking that your big goals and aspirations all need to be set by the first day of January.
Regularly setting goals and objectives is a great way to keep yourself motivated and focused on the things that you want to get done. Plus, you’ll feel accomplished when you manage to check one of those goals off your list—increasing your productivity and ambition even more. It’s a definite win-win!
3. Eat Healthy
Focusing on good nutrition is important any time of year. But, it’s especially crucial in the winter months when you’re already feeling sluggish and lethargic. Piling fried and greasy foods on top of your lack of motivation will only make things worse—and will also make you want to take a long nap.
As tempting as that may sound, do your best to watch the foods you’re consuming. Instead of filling up with sugars and carbohydrates, remember to incorporate plenty of protein, fruits, and vegetables. And, as much as that hot mug of cocoa might be calling your name, remember to drink plenty of water as well. Keeping an eye on your diet will improve your overall health, as well as your energy level.
4. Reward Yourself
It’s no secret that the winter can start to feel long, and you might begin to think that the summer will never come around again. So, it’s important to focus on the positives and implement a reward system for your hard work.
Maybe you want to plan a vacation that you can mark on the calendar and plan for. Perhaps you want to treat yourself to a nice dinner out with friends. Or, maybe it’s something as simple as not allowing yourself to watch your favorite television show until you’ve completed your to-do list.
Whatever you choose to do is up to you. But, setting up rewards for yourself is a great idea for a few reasons. First, it’s a boost to your motivation—inspiring you to continue trucking along, even when you feel discouraged. Secondly, it gives you something to look forward to. That positivity goes a long way to help you make it through the bleakness of the winter months!
5. Stay Social
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a big fan of a nice, long nap. And, there are certain points in the winter where hibernation sounds like a dream come true. But, as tempting as hiding out in your house might seem, it’s important to get out and stay social as much as you can!
Make plans with friends and family on the weekend. Grab lunch with your co-workers or other professional connections rather than hiding out at your desk. Join a club or exercise class that gets you out of the house. Filling your time with the things you enjoy not only makes the winter pass faster, but will also greatly improve your attitude. And, the better your outlook, the more productive you’ll be.
Yes, it’s easy to think that bears have it made in the winter. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend a few months hibernating when the weather turns cold? However, just because the seasons change doesn’t mean your productivity needs to take a dive. Put a few of these tips into action, and prepare for your most productive and successful winter yet!
