Oh, graduation. That exciting time when you finally get to bid adieu to the student life and take your running leap into the “real world”.
It’s thrilling. But, it’s also a little bit terrifying. Because—let’s face it—being a part of that proverbial “real world” means you need to have some sort of real job. And, well, you’ve heard that those aren’t always quite so easy to find.
True, finding a job can be a challenge. But, what if I told you there are a few things you can do now to significantly increase your chances of landing a job before you ever actually even graduate—or at least shortly thereafter? Sounds a little too good to be true?
Well, surprise! Today must be your lucky day, because I’ve rounded up three solid tips that are sure to help you stand out and find success in that competitive “real world” job market. Let’s get right to the good stuff, shall we?
1. Network, Network, Network
You’ve heard the age old sentiment time and time again: “It’s not always what you know, but who you know.” And, if you’re someone who has yet to build yourself a large web of connections? That taunting statement was likely enough to have you nervously shaking in your boots.
But, have no fear! It’s never too late to start expanding your network. In fact, right now is the absolute ideal time. So, channel your energy into shaking some hands, meeting new people, and just generally getting your name out there.
How? Start by brushing up your LinkedIn profile and Twitter bio to connect with professionals there. Set up some informational interviews with companies you’re interested in. Attend networking events, volunteer in your community, join professional organizations, and strike up conversations with absolutely anyone—yes, even that random person behind you in line at the grocery store.
Focus on growing your web of contacts, and you’ll be surprised at how many different opportunities manage to find their way to you!
2. Pick Up Some New Skills
If you’re just graduating, chances are you’re feeling a little uneasy about your qualifications and what the heck you should list on your very first resume—you have so little experience under your belt, after all.
However, while you may not have years and years of professional history to your name, you can definitely still pick up and refine some awesome new skills that will help you set you apart against all of that stiff competition.
So, sign up for a course (either online or in-person) or ask an expert or mentor to show you how something’s done. The more skills you have, the better—particularly when you don’t have a ton of actual experience to showcase.
3. Market Yourself
Think the term “market yourself” sounds a little weird? I can’t blame you. After all, you aren’t a handbag or a sports car. However, if you’ve set your sights on landing a job—and landing one fast!—you’re going to need to do a little shameless self-promotion.
Post status updates on your LinkedIn profile about some of your recent work, awards, or accomplishments. Set up a personal website or blog to showcase some of the stuff you’re incredibly proud of—that’ll be a great resource to send to prospective employers. Bring your resume (or at least a card with your contact information on it) with you everywhere. Put yourself out there for new professional opportunities, even if they seem totally out of your comfort zone.
Do what you can to get out there and build a reputation (ahem, a positive one, please) for yourself. That’ll pay dividends during your job search!
Approaching graduation is an exciting time, but it’s also usually enough to send a nauseous feeling all the way up from your stomach to your throat. The real world (and the real world job market!) can be a scary, scary place.
While landing a job by graduation might seem like a total pipe dream, it’s actually more doable than you think. Put these three quick tips to work for you, and you’ll be able to stroll off that college campus and straight into your new career!
