Duties * Assists the Gastroenterologist and/or the GI Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and/or emergency procedures * Assists with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies. * Provides patients an initial preparation checklist and provides an explanation of the procedures to minimize fears and to ensure their cooperation. * Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates equipment for designated procedures. * Moves the mobile procedure cart, equipment cart and portable monitor to the ED, ICU or OR. * Prepares the equipment for operation; and, assists the gastroenterology physician in the procedure with the equipment. * Positions and drapes the patient in accordance with clinic standard operating procedures. * Operates the automatic endoscope reprocessing system to disinfect equipment. * Disinfects equipment to prevent patient infection and cross-contamination by disassembling the scope, brushes parts and dips into a solution prior to putting into the washer. * Prepares reports on examinations, equipment and utilization, workload, supply status, consumption and related matters. * Maintains inventory according to standards. * Performs all setup of equipment, checks instruments/equipment for completeness and proper functioning prior to beginning procedure; and troubleshoots equipment during procedures as necessary. Requirements Conditions of employment * Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. * A Personnel Security Investigation is required. * This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. * This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).. * Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting in gastroenterology procedures; Preparing patient for gastroenterology procedures; Setting up equipment and/or instruments for designated procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Gastroenterology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
