Web3 Accounting information

What is Web3 accounting?

Web3 accounting refers to the practice of managing, tracking, and reporting financial transactions that occur on blockchain and decentralized platforms. Unlike traditional accounting, Web3 accounting deals with cryptocurrencies, tokens, NFTs, and other digital assets, requiring specialized tools and knowledge to ensure accuracy and compliance. Accountants in this field must understand blockchain technology, smart contracts, and often work with decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. The role is evolving quickly as regulations and technologies change, making ongoing education crucial for professionals in this area.

What are some unique challenges Web3 Accountants face when tracking and reporting digital asset transactions?

Web3 Accountants often encounter challenges such as managing the complexity of tracking multiple wallet addresses, handling cross-chain transactions, and ensuring accurate valuation of volatile digital assets. Additionally, they must stay updated on evolving regulatory requirements and best practices for digital asset reporting, which may differ significantly from traditional accounting. Collaborating closely with developers and legal teams is also common, as these professionals help clarify transaction details and compliance standards.

What is the difference between Web3 Accounting vs Blockchain Accountant?

AspectWeb3 AccountingBlockchain Accountant
CredentialsAccounting certifications, Web3/crypto knowledgeAccounting certifications, blockchain technology expertise
Work EnvironmentCrypto startups, blockchain firms, decentralized projectsFinancial institutions, auditing firms, blockchain companies
Industry UsageWeb3 projects, decentralized finance (DeFi), NFT platformsAuditing blockchain transactions, financial reporting for crypto assets

Web3 Accounting focuses on managing financial records within the decentralized Web3 ecosystem, emphasizing crypto transactions and smart contract accounting. Blockchain Accountants specialize in auditing and verifying blockchain transactions, ensuring compliance and accuracy. While both roles require accounting credentials and blockchain knowledge, Web3 Accounting is more integrated with decentralized projects, whereas Blockchain Accountants often work in auditing and regulatory contexts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web3 Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web3 Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency transactions, and relevant financial regulations, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance and professional certification (e.g., CPA or equivalent). Familiarity with blockchain explorers, crypto tax software, and smart contract auditing tools is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills help you stand out in this rapidly evolving field. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective management of digital assets in decentralized environments.

Job description

Our mission is to bring web3 to a billion people, by providing builders with the tools they need to build exceptional onchain products. Alchemy is the only complete developer platform that offers the powerful APIs, SDKs, and tools necessary to build and scale onchain apps and rollups. Our infrastructure powers 70% of the top web3 teams, 90%+ of web2 companies building in web3 and 100+ million end users. Our customers include top web3 brands like Polymarket, OpenSea, Circle, WorldCoin, as well as major global brands like Shopify and Adobe. The Alchemy team draws from decades of deep expertise in massively scalable infrastructure, AI, and blockchain from leadership roles at leading companies and universities like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Stanford, and MIT. We're backed by the world's leading VCs and institutions, including Lightspeed, Silver Lake, a16z, Coatue, Pantera, Addition, Stanford University, Coinbase, and Charles Schwab, among others.

The Role

Alchemy is looking to hire a legal counsel to help our company scale up to the next phase of growth. With regulatory clarity and institutional adoption increasing, there has never been a more exciting time to support the growth of Web3: the next era of the Internet. We are looking for a force multiplier to work closely with our General Counsel to build our legal strategy and grow the legal team over time. This individual will have an unparalleled opportunity to advise on virtually every aspect of the business and is expected to autonomously drive projects to completion by partnering closely with cross‑functional internal teams and thoughtfully drawing upon outside counsel where needed. This is a generalist role requiring the mental agility to tackle the wide variety of legal issues typical for SaaS businesses supporting Web3 and blockchain use cases.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with colleagues in sales, product, engineering, finance/accounting, operations, corporate development, equity, and other areas.
  • Draft and negotiate agreements with strategic customers, blockchain protocols, partners, and software providers.
  • Develop and update agreements, website terms, and policies, and other scalable processes to help our teams move faster.
  • Counsel our product and engineering teams on new product launches and help translate regulations including sanctions, securities law, and money transmission laws.
  • Coordinate with our marketing team to review and develop scalable guidelines on promotional materials and contests.
  • Support our corporate development efforts and oversee strategic acquisitions.
  • Stay current with global regulatory frameworks, and support engagement with regulators & lawmakers, notice & comment letters, and review of draft legislation.
  • Oversee corporate structuring, including domestic and international entity formation to meet business needs.
  • Advise on global data protection laws, including GDPR and CCPA, ensuring that the company's data handling practices comply with privacy regulations.
  • Advise our People team on employee policies and other employment law issues.
  • Continue to build our patent and trademark portfolio, lead trademark enforcement efforts, and counsel engineering teams on open‑source strategy.
  • Advise our Alchemy Ventures team on investment documents (SAFEs, token warrants).
What We’re Looking For
  • 8+ years of legal experience, preferably with a mix of BigLaw experience and in‑house experience at a high‑growth tech company.
  • Strong track record of cross‑functional partnership across teams (BD, Finance, Product, Engineering) to align on creative solutions.
  • Passion for crypto, blockchain technologies, DeFi, DAOs, and/or NFTs.
  • Collaborative team player with relentless optimism in the face of adversity.
  • Self‑starter with a “pick‑up‑a‑broom” mentality, able to identify problems and take ownership to improve them.
  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Member of a U.S. state bar in good standing, preferably in California or New York.
Nice‑to‑Haves
  • Familiarity with financial & securities regulations.
  • Web3 experience.
  • Startup experience.
  • Experience founding a company or building side projects.
Compensation & Benefits

Alchemy is committed to offering competitive compensation, including salary as well as equity. Additionally, Alchemy offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as other benefits such as 401(k), paid parental leave, fertility & family‑forming benefits, a home office stipend, and unlimited flexible time off. We offer a hybrid work model, with a vibrant office in downtown SF and NYC, daily DoorDash credits for in‑office meals, and gym & commuting benefits. The compensation range for this position is estimated to be between $270,000 - 330,000 annually. Please note this range reflects total cash compensation only (comprised of a base salary + target bonus of 15%) and does not include our equity, or benefits offering. Your salary will be determined by various factors, including relevant experience, skill set, qualifications, and other business needs.
