2026-2027 Head Coach, Track - Pleasant View Middle School

Springfield Public Schools | Pleasant View K-8 | Springfield, Missouri

Job Title: Head Coach

Reports to: Site Athletic Director

Work Schedule: Seasonal, Non-Exempt

Salary: Extra-curricular Stipend Group I

Purpose Statement

The Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head Coach. The district serves about 25,000 students across 36 elementary schools, one intermediate school, nine middle schools, five high schools, and various alternative programs.

The Head Coach assists in designing and implementing the athletic program for the assigned sport, provides supervision of coaching personnel and students, uses sound instructional techniques, serves as a positive role model, and liaises between the school, other schools, community, and organizations.

Essential Functions
  • Analyzes opposition's strategies prior to and during athletic events to develop game plans.
  • Assesses student athletes and provides feedback on individual performance.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information related to their role.
  • Assists with supporting activities such as parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Develops practice regimes for student athletes, including strength, speed, agility, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Develops game strategies and plans to prepare the team and individual athletes.
  • Evaluates facilities and playing fields to identify hazards and recommend modifications to reduce injury risk.
  • Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Appropriates program funding in compliance with state and district policies.
  • Implements practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation.
  • Instructs student athletes to promote growth in skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains records such as statistics, insurance, permission forms, schedules, and equipment inventories.
  • Monitors academic eligibility, providing counseling or tutoring as needed to maintain eligibility.
  • Oversees student managers and volunteers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Serves as the liaison for the athletic program at various functions, representing the district.
  • Supervises athletes during all participation areas, ensuring activities are conducted safely.
  • Supports students during the college recruiting process.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned by the head coach, to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

Knowledge: Basic math, technical information interpretation, writing, public relations, injury prevention, laws, codes, policies, eligibility guidelines, and safety procedures.

Skills: Adaptability to changing priorities, first aid administration, coordination with schools and agencies, communication, and financial transaction oversight.

Ability: Scheduling, data collation, equipment operation, problem solving, leadership, confidentiality, and ability to work with diverse individuals.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices, and utilizing resources from other units to perform job functions.

Experience

Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, required.

Education

Bachelor's Degree, required.

Miscellaneous Requirements

Background clearance satisfactory to the District, required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Physical demands include occasional lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and significant fine finger dexterity. The job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing, with exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury.
