What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vehicle Modeling Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vehicle Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, strong mathematical modeling skills, and experience with simulation methodologies. Familiarity with technical tools like MATLAB/Simulink, CarSim, or ANSYS, and knowledge of programming languages such as Python or C++, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you interpret simulation results and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are critical to ensuring accurate vehicle performance predictions, efficient design processes, and successful integration of new technologies.

What is vehicle modeling simulation?

Vehicle modeling simulation is the process of creating digital models of vehicles and using computer software to simulate their behavior under various conditions. This technique helps engineers and designers analyze vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency without the need for costly physical prototypes. Simulations can include dynamics, aerodynamics, structural analysis, and control systems, supporting faster development cycles and innovation in the automotive industry.

Common Search & ComparisonVehicle Modeling Simulation vs Vehicle Design Engineer

Vehicle Modeling Simulation focuses on creating digital models and running simulations to test vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency. Vehicle Design Engineers develop the physical vehicle designs, integrating aesthetics, functionality, and manufacturability. While both roles collaborate closely, modeling specialists emphasize virtual testing, whereas design engineers focus on physical design and prototyping.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Vehicle Modeling Simulation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Vehicle Modeling Simulation often encounter challenges such as integrating complex data from multiple vehicle systems, ensuring simulation accuracy, and keeping models up-to-date with evolving vehicle technologies. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as hardware engineers, software developers, and test drivers—is essential to refine models and validate simulation results. Staying current with industry-standard tools and best practices, as well as continuous learning and communication, can help address these challenges and contribute to successful project outcomes.

Job description

Air Vehicle Modeling and Simulation Analyst

The Opportunity:

Your engineering skills and determination are needed to develop the cutting-edge technology used to support the warfighter and maintain national security. Join an energetic team whose day-to-day mission involves breaking down the Air Force's toughest challenges and communicating the essential results of that work to their leadership. As an aerospace or mechanical engineer, you understand the complexities of modern aerospace vehicles. That knowledge is key when it comes to modeling fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, and weapon systems. We're looking for a problem solver who can use their skills to help perform detailed analyses, including the evaluation of missile performance and survivability analyses of weapon systems and platforms. We're looking for lifelong learners and motivated, independent thinkers who can contribute to a fast-paced, team environment focused on client delivery. This is an opportunity to hone your technical abilities on significant and current engineering problems, all while gaining experience in leadership and communication.

Our modeling and simulation team performs a variety of classified analyses of weapon and platform concepts for DoD clients, and we also develop the detailed models and simulations required. That's why we need you, an aerospace or mechanical engineer, with a solid background in aerodynamics, control theory, and flight dynamics to build models of cutting-edge aerospace systems. You'll also perform modeling tasks, including building aerodynamic coefficient tables, calculating flight envelopes, and the development and refinement of aircraft models in Fortran, C++, MATLAB, and Simulink. You'll directly impact the Air Force's mission by helping determine what tactics, techniques, and procedures to improve survivability and vulnerability against threat systems as well as helping make an informed decision for the acquisition of future systems.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 2+ years of experience with flight dynamics and vehicle performance evaluation

  • Experience with coding in MATLAB, C++, or Fortran

  • Experience with Simulink

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Secret clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with engineering and mathematics

  • Experience with modeling and simulation

  • Experience with Linux

  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills

  • TS/SCI clearance

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
