Job description

General Summary
Temporary Position from June until October
Location: Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital
Shift: 16-24 hours per week / 8am - 4:30pm / Likely Tues, Wed, Fri - No weekends
We are seeking a proactive, detail-oriented Surgical Training Lab Intern to coordinate the day-to-day logistics of our surgical training facility. This role is designed for students or entry-level professionals - such as those in surgical technology, laboratory sciences, or pre-medicine - seeking hands-on experience in a clinical education environment.
The Lab Specialist is responsible for the physical setup of the bioskills lab as well as supporting faculty during anatomy and surgical workshops. This position is primarily based at Henry Ford Health Providence Novi Hospital, with occasional travel to our Southfield location to support operational needs.
Note: While dissection is not required, the candidate must be comfortable with the professional handling, positioning, and draping of human cadaver tissue.
Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance to faculty as needed to ensure procedural requirements are met.

  • Lead the professional handling of specimens, including anatomical positioning and surgical draping.

  • Maintain rigorous safety and hygiene standards by ensuring the facility, workstations, and equipment are cleaned and sanitized according to protocol.

  • Oversee the surgical instrument inventory, including the cleaning and organized storage of all tools.

  • Setup and breakdown lab stations, ensuring that they are ready for use and items are disposed of appropriately.

Qualifications
  • Completion of college-level coursework in Biology or Anatomy is preferred. Specialized training or experience in Surgical Technology or Laboratory Sciences is preferred.

  • Must demonstrate a respectful and dignified approach to working with cadaveric tissue.

Experience
  • Required: Prior customer service experience.

  • Preferred: Prior experience in a laboratory or clinical setting; familiarity with the Operating Room environment or surgical instrumentation.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move equipment or specimens (up to 50 lbs. with assistance).

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
