This is a temporary, part-time, seasonal position for Summer 2026
Dates of employment: June 2, 2026 - July 24, 2026

About Us:
DeKalb County is dedicated to providing a safe and fun environment for children with special needs to grow, learn, and experience the joys of summer camp. We are committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere where each child is supported and encouraged. We are looking for compassionate, patient, and dedicated individuals to join our team as Recreation Assistants.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a Recreation Assistant, Therapeutic Program, you will work directly with children with various disabilities, helping them engage in daily activities such as arts and crafts, sports, swimming, nature walks, and team-building exercises. You will provide emotional, behavioral, and physical support, ensuring a positive and enriching experience for each camper.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with children with special needs in a camp setting, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to campers with diverse needs (e.g., autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, learning disabilities).
  • Assist in leading and supervising camp activities such as sports, arts and crafts, swimming, and nature-based programs.
  • Communicate effectively with camp directors, other counselors, and parents about camper needs and progress.
  • Provide a positive role model for campers by demonstrating responsibility, kindness, and inclusivity.
  • Help develop and implement individualized support plans based on camper goals and needs.
  • Attend camp staff training and follow all camp policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous experience working with children, particularly children with special needs, is preferred.
  • Ability to stay calm, patient, and positive in all situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to accept temporary employment
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Previous experience in a recreation setting working with youth is preferred
