Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
These positions are represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary; Monday through Sunday; between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
LOCATION(S):8400 Starview Drive
These seasonal positions will end approximately six (6) months after date of hire.
Employees who are initially hired for any Seasonal position shall be placed at Step 3, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.
Remote work schedule opportunities (telecommuting) may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40.
To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.
Example of Duties
Under supervision, the Recreation Specialist II position leads entry level staff that is responsible for delivering parks and recreation activities and operating parks and recreation facilities in the Anchorage Bowl. Monitors and supervises participants, organizes and directs activities, cleans facilities and grounds and directed. Work with independence and initiative within the departments established policies and procedures to perform as an entry level lead. Provide safe recreation and learning environments. Provide excellent customer service in-person, via phone and via email. Schedule and provide routine information concerning reservations of training and activities. Coordinate and maintain database for reservations of facility, training and activities. Will be assigned to one of the following facilities: Kincaid Outdoor Center, Lidia Selkregg Chalet and Golf Course, Centennial Campground. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and one (1) year experience in the program or activity under consideration. Prior experience in the use of recreational equipment is required.
All applicants must possess or obtain:
• American Red Cross First Aid Certification, and American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent at time of hire.
• A valid State of Alaska Driver's License with an acceptable driving record at time of hire.
• Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400) at time of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of current American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certifications or the equivalent.
All required certifications must remain current for the duration of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $47.00 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.
If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security
Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
