Job Description

Medtrans Ambulance is seeking experienced EMS professionals to serve as Field Training Officer Captain (FTO Captain) within the Operations and Training teams. The FTO Captain serves as a senior Field Training Officer and station leader responsible for supporting field personnel, assisting with training initiatives, and maintaining operational readiness at assigned stations.

This position combines the responsibilities of Lead Field Training Officer and Station Captain into a single leadership role. The FTO Captain acts as the primary station liaison for EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, and Field Training Officers assigned to the station, providing support, mentorship, and operational guidance.

The FTO Captain communicates operational needs, concerns, and personnel issues to supervisors and management while helping ensure that Medtrans operational standards, training expectations, and patient care practices are consistently maintained.

This role works closely with the Director of Safety & Risk Management, Operations leadership, and Field Supervisors to promote a safe, professional, and well-supported working environment for field personnel.


Responsibilities:Field Training Officer Leadership

• Serve as the lead Field Training Officer for the assigned station.
• Provide mentorship and support to EMT-FTO I and Paramedic-FTO I personnel assigned to the station.
• Assist in monitoring trainee progress and ensuring training standards are being maintained.
• Provide guidance and support to trainees and FTOs when questions or concerns arise.


Training Support

• Assist with training initiatives as needed, including:

• New employee orientation
• Classroom training sessions
• Skills labs
• EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course)
• Operational readiness training

• Support the Director of Safety & Risk Management and Training staff with training programs as requested.


Station Leadership & Crew Support

• Act as the primary liaison between station personnel and operations leadership.
• Provide support and guidance to EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, and FTOs assigned to the station.
• Communicate operational needs, personnel concerns, and logistical issues to supervisors and management.
• Promote a professional and supportive work environment within the station.
• Ensure that station operations run smoothly and that personnel have the resources needed to perform their duties.


Station Operations & Readiness

• Assist in maintaining clean, organized, and operationally ready stations.
• Monitor station inventory including medical supplies, equipment, and station resources.
• Assist in ensuring ambulances are properly maintained, stocked, and operationally ready.
• Serve as a point of contact for operational issues occurring within the station.
• Assist in addressing day-to-day operational challenges under the guidance of Operations leadership.


Operational Duties

• Perform all duties associated with the employee’s primary certification level (EMT or Paramedic).
• Maintain clinical competency and operational readiness while serving in the FTO Captain role.
• Support operational needs and assignments as directed by leadership.


Communication

• Stay informed of new policies, procedures, protocol updates, or equipment changes.
• Assist in distributing important operational information to station personnel.
• Serve as a resource for field employees while on duty.


Training Program Participation

• Attend required FTO meetings.
• Participate in additional training sessions assigned by the Director of Safety & Risk Management.
• Support onboarding activities and other training initiatives as requested.

Qualifications:Required Licenses & Certifications

• Valid California EMT or Paramedic license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association – required for Paramedics
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association – required for Paramedics
• Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical), current and valid
• Ambulance Driver’s License (ADL), current and valid
• Valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Ability to obtain and maintain county accreditation in Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and/or Orange County, as required by operational assignment
• Ability to maintain all required licenses, certifications, and continuing education in good standing


Required Experience

• Minimum of one (1) year of employment with Medtrans

OR

• Minimum of six (1) year of prior EMS field experience

• Must have prior experience serving as a Field Training Officer at Medtrans Ambulance.
• Must demonstrate strong clinical performance, documentation accuracy, and professionalism.
• Must not have received any Written Warning or Final Warning disciplinary actions within the previous six (6) months.


Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Higher education in EMS, healthcare, education, or a related field preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

• Comprehensive knowledge of BLS/ALS protocols, EMS regulations, and ambulance operations.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and objectively evaluate trainee performance.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to provide constructive feedback and foster professional growth.
• Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities in dynamic environments.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety, compliance, and excellence in patient care.


Technical Skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Experience with ePCR systems, training databases, LMS platforms, or compliance tracking tools preferred


Driving Requirements

• Must be authorized and approved to operate Medtrans company vehicles, including ambulances.
• Must maintain a safe driving record that meets Medtrans insurance and risk management requirements.
• Must comply with all Medtrans vehicle operations and safe driving policies.


Job Type

Hourly

Compensation

$21.00 - $25.00 per hour (EMTs)
$38.00 - $42.00 per hour (Paramedics)
