The City of Norfolk's Department of Transportation is currently seeking Traffic Maintenance Technician I's for its Traffic Operations Center. The Traffic Maintenance Technicians are responsible for performing field installations of traffic signs and pavement markings. Work also involves providing support for special events by setting up traffic control devices.
The Department of Transportation is responsible for the safe and convenient mobility of everybody, whether we walk, ride, roll or drive in Norfolk. In order to accomplish this, The Traffic Operations Center builds, paints, maintains and operates all signalized and non-signalized traffic control facilities shaping the City's mobility and transportation safety priorities. Traffic Operations maintains more than 700 miles of traffic lane lines and 813 crosswalk locations.
Traffic Operations also maintains 315 traffic signals, 120 school and pedestrian crossing signals, 22 continuous and activated flashers and over 31,000 streetlights. Finally, Traffic Operations is responsible for fabricating, installing and maintaining roadway and parking signage that includes more than 40,000 traffic control signs.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Administers pavement markings by loading material into kettle and other equipment, sweeping, setting up machines, setting up cones and safety precautions, laying materials, working with paint truck and machines, operating eradicators, and removing pavement markings.
- Installs repairs and maintains signs by drilling, digging, riveting, hammering, grinding, banding, bolting, cementing, and driving poles, removing poles, installing signs and removing signs.
- Performs other duties by inspecting and maintaining equipment and vehicles, investigating requirements for signs, crosswalks, lane lines, arrows or other markings, retrieving, loading, and unloading safety devices for special events, and providing information to motorists and pedestrians.
Education/Experience
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
One year experience in traffic, construction, plumbing or HVAC work preferred.

Work Schedule:
- Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- This position is classified as Essential and will be required to work 24-hour shifts during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
