What is a script coverage intern?

Script Coverage Interns are entry-level professionals in the film, television, or literary industries who read scripts and provide detailed reports called 'coverage.' These reports typically summarize the script, analyze key elements like plot, character, and dialogue, and assess the script’s strengths and weaknesses. The feedback helps producers, agents, or executives decide whether to pursue a project further. Interns gain valuable industry experience and insight into the script evaluation process. This role is ideal for those interested in screenwriting, development, or production.

What are some common challenges faced by script coverage interns, and how can they be overcome?

Script Coverage Interns often face the challenge of reading and analyzing a high volume of scripts within tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and insightful feedback. Balancing speed with thoroughness is key, as is adapting to different genres and styles. Developing a consistent coverage template and seeking feedback from supervisors can help interns improve their evaluations and time management. Collaboration with other interns and staff can also provide valuable perspectives and support, making the learning curve more manageable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a script coverage intern?

To thrive as a Script Coverage Intern, you need strong analytical reading skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of story structure, often supported by coursework or experience in film, screenwriting, or literature. Familiarity with industry-standard script formatting software like Final Draft and the ability to use coverage templates are typically required.
