Job description

Overview

Every year, people spend nearly one trillion dollars on groceries-and food is one of the most meaningful parts of daily life, from rituals and celebrations to comfort and care. Instacart's Design & Research team is dedicated to making grocery shopping effortless for everyone, solving large-scale challenges across our four-sided marketplace of consumers, shoppers, retailers, and advertisers.

We're seeking a Senior Product Designer to join our Meals & Health pod and shape highly personalized consumer experiences that integrate meal planning, nutrition, allergy management, and family dynamics into the core grocery journey. You'll collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Research, Data Science, Marketing, and Brand to create cohesive, trust-building experiences at scale that unlock new layers of value for households with specific needs and goals.

This is a high-impact, highly collaborative role for a designer who thrives in ambiguity, balances rigorous execution with creative exploration, and connects strategy, interaction, and craft. You'll work at the frontier of AI-powered, agentic grocery experiences alongside a tight, senior team that values clear communication, ownership, and inventive problem-solving. The role is remote-friendly across North America, with a preference for candidates able to collaborate effectively with Pacific Time hours.

About the Job

As a key member of the Meals & Health pod, you'll lead end-to-end product design across high-visibility surfaces and new 01 experiences that help customers plan meals, manage nutrition and allergies, and build healthy household routines.

  • Lead end-to-end design from discovery through delivery across Meals & Health initiatives, including problem framing, exploration, prototyping, validation, and handoff.
  • Design cohesive journeys across home, browse, and personalized feeds-establishing patterns, grids, and hierarchy that balance user needs, business goals, and partner visibility.
  • Define experience frameworks for key moments (e.g., first 3 orders, onboarding for health goals, meal planning adoption) and translate principles into flows, UI, and content hierarchy.
  • Leverage AI-assisted prototyping and concept development; explore agentic and conversational interfaces that bring personalized, AI-powered experiences to life within our design system.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Research, Data Science, Marketing, and Brand to shape requirements, run experiments, and ship measurable outcomes at speed and quality.
  • Plan or collaborate on research to uncover insights about meals, nutrition, and lifecycle behaviors; synthesize findings into journey maps and design opportunities.
  • Raise the bar for experience-led thinking-mentoring partners on journeys and emotions (not just screens) and advocating for coherent, principle-driven work.
 About YouMinimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience designing consumer-facing digital products across web and mobile, with a portfolio of shipped, high-impact work and measurable outcomes.
  • Expertise in interaction and visual design, with demonstrated fluency in design systems, information architecture, and content hierarchy.
  • Proven ability to translate ambiguous problem spaces into clear design frameworks, experience principles, and shipped product experiences.
  • Track record partnering with Product, Engineering, Research, and Data Science through discovery, iteration, testing, and launch.
  • Proficiency in Figma and Google Slides; experience incorporating generative AI tools into the design process.
  • Experience presenting work and rationale to cross-functional stakeholders and senior leaders to drive alignment and decision-making.
  • Comfort operating in fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environments and creating structure from loosely defined opportunity areas.
 Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with meal planning, nutrition, health goals, or allergy/restriction management-and how they intersect with household grocery behavior.
  • Experience in marketplaces, e-commerce, grocery, CPG, or subscription products where lifecycle, personalization, and repeat behavior are critical.
  • Experience designing high-visibility surfaces such as home feeds, personalized browse, and merchandising placements (including density and above/below-the-fold strategies).
  • Background shaping onboarding, activation, and retention journeys that build habits, loyalty, and trust.
  • Hands-on work with AI-assisted prototyping and agentic/conversational interface design.
  • Ability to influence outcomes on multi-team initiatives without direct authority.
