Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Insurance Defense Attorney (Associate) to join our litigation team and provide effective, client-focused defense on behalf of insurance carriers. The successful candidate will manage a diverse caseload of first- and third-party claims, develop defense strategies, drive case resolution through motion practice, settlement negotiation and trial when required, and deliver timely, cost-conscious representation that protects insurer interests and reduces exposure.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a docket of insurance defense matters from intake through resolution, including coverage disputes, bodily injury, property damage and subrogation claims.
  • Draft and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and other litigation documents with accuracy and professional quality.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare persuasive written memoranda and briefs on case-dispositive and evidentiary issues.
  • Take and defend depositions; prepare witnesses for deposition and trial testimony and coordinate expert witnesses.
  • Develop and execute case strategies with an emphasis on early but prudent resolution to limit exposure and litigation costs.
  • Prepare for and try cases as necessary, including jury selection, witness examination, and presentation of evidence.
  • Negotiate settlements with opposing counsel and recommend resolution strategies to clients based on thorough cost-benefit analyses.
  • Maintain open, responsive communication with insurer clients, claims representatives, and internal teams; provide regular status updates and litigation forecasts.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys and support staff, delegate assignments, and review work product for quality and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate time and billing records and adhere to firm and client billing guidelines and litigation budgets.
  • Utilize case management and eDiscovery tools to organize files, manage deadlines and ensure compliance with court rules and client requirements.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the state bar.
  • 3+ years of experience as an associate practicing insurance defense litigation; demonstrated courtroom and deposition experience preferred.
  • Proven knowledge of civil procedure, evidence rules, and substantive areas relevant to insurance defense (e.g., negligence, property damage, coverage law).
  • Strong drafting, oral advocacy and negotiation skills, with a record of producing high-quality pleadings and briefs.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, prioritize deadlines and work independently while collaborating with team members.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior attorneys and paralegals is a plus.
  • Familiarity with eDiscovery workflows, case management software, and legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
  • Excellent client-facing skills: clear communication, responsiveness, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into practical recommendations.
  • Detail-oriented, ethical, and committed to delivering cost-effective legal solutions for insurance clients.
