Grant Compliance Accountant
Position Summary
The Grant Compliance Accountant is responsible for reviewing, monitoring, and evaluating grant-related financial activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and private funding requirements. Working closely with the Grant Manager, this position conducts detailed financial reviews, analyzes expenditures, verifies supporting documentation, and prepares compliance reports for review by the Senior Accountant.
The Grant Compliance Accountant serves as a key member of the finance team, helping safeguard organizational integrity, reduce financial risk, and ensure proper stewardship of grant funds. This position is fully remote and a contracted position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Grant Financial Monitoring
- Review grant expenditures for accuracy, allowability, allocability, and compliance with grant agreements and applicable regulations.
- Monitor grant budgets and spending trends to identify discrepancies, overspending, underspending, or potential compliance concerns.
- Verify supporting documentation for grant-funded transactions, including invoices, payroll allocations, contracts, and reimbursements.
- Provide recommendations to improve the quality of the Grant Department.
- Ensure financial activities comply with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), HUD requirements, state regulations, and organizational policies, as applicable.
Compliance Review and Reporting
- Conduct monthly grant financial compliance reviews in partnership with the Grant Manager.
- Prepare written compliance reports, findings, recommendations, and corrective action summaries for the Senior Accountant.
- Identify potential risks, weaknesses in internal controls, or compliance deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist with the preparation and coordination of grant monitoring visits and audits.
Financial Analysis and Reconciliation
- Reconcile grant expenditures with accounting records and approved budgets.
- Review cost allocations and ensure expenses are properly charged to funding sources.
- Assist in the preparation of grant financial reports and reimbursement requests.
- Analyze financial data to support grant performance and fiscal accountability.
Collaboration and Technical Assistance
- Work closely with program staff, grant managers, and finance personnel to resolve compliance issues.
- Provide guidance regarding grant financial requirements and documentation standards.
- Assist in developing and updating grant financial procedures and internal controls.
Audit Support
- Maintain organized grant financial records and documentation.
- Support external audits, monitoring reviews, and funder requests.
- Assist in responding to audit findings and implementing corrective action plans.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting, grant accounting, or financial compliance experience.
- Experience working with federal, state, local, or nonprofit grant funding preferred.
- Knowledge of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and grant compliance requirements preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of grant budgeting, cost allocation, and financial compliance practices.
- Ability to analyze financial records and identify discrepancies.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships across departments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification.
- Experience with HUD, HHS, SAMHSA, DOJ, or other federal grant programs.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting and grants management.

Reports To: Senior Accountant
Works Closely With: Grant Manager, Program Directors, Finance Department, and Executive Leadership
Contracted Hours: 10 hours
Wages: $1000.00 for maximum of 10 hours per month.
