Remote Sensor Operator information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Sensor Operator, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by Remote Sensor Operators, and how can they be effectively addressed?
What are Remote Sensor Operators?
What is the difference between Remote Sensor Operator vs Remote Drone Pilot?
| Aspect | Remote Sensor Operator | Remote Drone Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | FAA Part 107 certification, technical training | FAA Part 107 certification, drone operation training |
| Work Environment | Monitoring sensors remotely, data analysis | Flying drones remotely, aerial data collection |
| Industry Usage | Environmental monitoring, security, infrastructure | Aerial photography, surveying, inspection |
Both roles require FAA Part 107 certification and involve remote operation. The Remote Sensor Operator focuses on monitoring and analyzing sensor data, while the Remote Drone Pilot operates drones for aerial tasks. They share similar credentials and work environments but differ in their specific tasks and industry applications.

Job description
Job Summary
Provide the customer with remote sensing support to develop processes using remote methods, to include advanced knowledge of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (lnSAR) processing and analysis and other remote sensing methods and advise on the Implementation of the processes in the unclassified cloud environment.
Primary Responsiblities
Develop processes using remote methods, including Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (lnSAR), plus other remote sensing methods or existing data and services, to operate as a tipping and queuing mechanism for geodetic survey requirements, and once viable processes are established, to guide the implementation of those processes in the unclassified cloud environment.
- Advise customer and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on the capabilities and use of lnSAR and other remote sensing methods, including for the purposes of change detection.
- Coordinate with customer Senior GEOINT Officers, Requirements Manager, Mission Managers, Tech Team, and Team Leads as needed to solicit input on technical requirements, including tipping and queuing thresholds for primary Intelligence Mission Data Plan (IMDP) products, and process accuracy assessment. '
- Utilize remote sensors and platforms, and associated processing and analysis tools, to establish high precision, high accuracy change detection methods for use in tipping and queuing of geodetic survey requirements or other geoscientific applications, including natural hazard analysis.
- Provide a statistical analysis of output data quality and uncertainties.
- Evaluate emerging data, services, and sensors for inclusion in the 1f process.
- Solicit post-deployment feedback from the Geodetic Surveys Requirements Manager, Mission Manager, Tech Team, and Team Leads, and refine the process as needed.
- Create or provide revisions to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs}, geodetic standards, and other documentation related to process development, standardization, or implementation in coordination with the customer's SMEs and standards personnel.
- Brief progress weekly at customer Staff Meeting, during Division Updates to customer, and in other forums as requested.
- Identify additional data sources or optimization methods for Geodetic Surveys processes and procedures using remote sensing methods, and assist with integration efforts and with other internal and external partners.
- Educate Geodetic Surveys personnel on the process and its strengths and limitations, and demonstrate capabilities as requested.
- Ensure accessibility of data from geographically separated branches, and by team leads in the field.
Basic Qualifications
- Typically requires a BA degree and 8 - 12 years of prior relevant experience or Masters with 6 - 10 years of prior relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of remote sensor and platform capabilities, including Synthetic Aperture Radar sensors and platforms.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience processing and analyzing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (lnSAR), to include image splitting, coregistration, interferogram generation, coherence estimation, debursting, topographic phase removal, phase filtering, phase unwrapping, geo coding, phase to displacement, masking out of low coherence areas.
- Experience using lnSAR to determine 3D deformation.
- Experience applying geodetic and photogrammetrlc principles to co-register multiple data sets to the WGS 84 reference frame and perform statistical analysis to determine the absolute and relative error.
- Experience using SNAP, SNAPHU, StaMPS, or similar lnSAR processing and analysis software.
- Experience using remote sensing analysis software suites, such as ERDAS IMAGINE, PCI Geomatics, or ESRI ArcGISPro.
- Knowledge of digital data formats such as vector data, raster data, shape files, GML, XML
- Knowledge of software engineering and evaluation of geomatics systems.
- Experience developing project plans with milestones and deliverables, tracking progress, and subsequent status reporting.
- Active TS/SCI with ability to be approved for a CI Poly
Preferred Qualifications
- STEM Degree with emphasis in remote sensing.
- Geodetic surveying or land surveying experience or coursework.
- Advanced knowledge of geodetic, photogrammetric, or statistical principles.
- Familiarity with customer systems architecture, including unclassified cloud environments.
