This recruitment is open to Washington residents and those residing on the ID/WA and OR/WA borders. Work may be performed remotely or from our office located in Tumwater, WA, based on the employee's preference.
This Non-Permanent Appointment is funded through August 31, 2027.
Workforce Pathways Professional: Build the Future of Public Health in Washington
The Workforce Pathways (WFP) Program, housed within the Office of Government & Community Affairs at the Washington State Department of Health, is a CDC-funded initiative that expands access to public health careers while strengthening Washington's public health workforce. Through meaningful project-based assignments, Workforce Pathways Professionals gain hands-on experience supporting public health programs, community partners, and state initiatives.
In this role, you will collaborate with Department of Health staff, host organizations, and community partners to advance public health projects and build practical experience in areas such as project coordination, community engagement, communications, research, policy, and program improvement. The program values diverse lived, educational, and professional experiences and is committed to building a workforce that reflects and effectively serves Washington's communities.
The Opportunity
As the Tribal Engagement & Knowledge Management Coordinator, you will develop the tools, resources, and communication processes that strengthen how the Washington State Department of Health partners with Tribes, Tribal communities, and Tribal organizations. Working within the Office of Tribal Public Health and Relations (OTPHR), you will lead projects that improve how organizational information is collected, organized, shared, and used to support meaningful Tribal engagement across the agency.
This role combines project coordination, research, communications, information management, and collaboration. You will build sustainable resources such as organizational profiles, engagement tracking tools, interactive maps, newsletters, and guidance documents that help staff coordinate outreach, strengthen partnerships, and make informed decisions. As part of the Workforce Pathways Program, you'll contribute to work that leaves lasting improvements in how the Department of Health engages with Tribal partners and supports healthier communities across Washington.
Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge management system that organizes Tribal partner information, engagement resources, and organizational data.
  • Research, analyze, and maintain information about Tribal governments, Tribal organizations, health clinics, and other partner organizations to support engagement planning and collaboration.
  • Develop and maintain SharePoint resources, engagement tracking tools, dashboards, and GIS-enabled maps that improve information sharing and support strategic outreach.
  • Create and manage a monthly external newsletter by coordinating content, writing and editing communications, and establishing sustainable publication processes.
  • Develop guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and a culturally appropriate photo library that supports consistent communications and long-term knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with Tribal partners, program staff, GIS specialists, IT staff, and other stakeholders to ensure information is accurate, accessible, and useful.
  • Produce reports, maps, and visual summaries that support engagement planning, organizational coordination, and informed decision making.
  • Document project outcomes, present progress updates, and contribute recommendations that support continuous improvement within the Workforce Pathways Program.

Minimum Qualifications

Option 1: Three (3) years of experience working in a public health, health services, Tribal, or community-based program supporting community engagement, partner outreach, communications, information management, or related program activities.
Option 2: A bachelor's degree or higher in public health, health communications, public administration, community health, business administration, or a closely related field. AND experience working in a public health, health services, Tribal, or community-based program supporting community engagement, partner outreach, communications, information management, or related program activities.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience working with or supporting communities underserved by public health systems, which may include Tribal Nations, Tribal organizations, communities of color, people with disabilities, immigrant and refugee communities, or other historically underserved populations.
  • Experience supporting Tribal engagement, community partnerships, or relationship building with external partners.
  • Experience developing written communications, educational materials, newsletters, reports, or other content that is accessible to individuals with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse partners, such as community organizations, Tribal partners, government agencies, healthcare organizations, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of public health issues, health disparities, or social factors that affect Tribal communities and other historically underserved populations.
  • Experience researching, organizing, and maintaining program, partner, or organizational information using databases, SharePoint, or similar information management systems.
  • Experience coordinating projects involving multiple invested partners while maintaining accurate documentation and meeting established timelines.

Working Conditions:
The following describes the working conditions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Setting:
  • This position may be based anywhere within Washington State and primarily operates in a telework environment. Workforce Pathways Professionals will work with their supervisor to establish an appropriate work schedule and may be expected to travel to the Tumwater duty station or other designated locations for meetings, training, or program activities, generally up to six times per year. Telework arrangements are subject to Department of Health policies and program needs.
  • The work is sedentary in nature and exposure to hazards limited to those commonly found in office environments. If in a DOH facility, the position may work in an open cubicle office setting.

Schedule:
  • This position has a work schedule of 40 hours per week. Although DOH business hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position would not normally require working in excess of 40 hours per week, but if it became necessary for business needs, your supervisor would notify you in advance. This position would not normally work an alternate schedule, but requests may be considered and are subject to supervisory approval.

Travel Requirements:
  • Travel is not required to perform the duties of this position; however infrequent travel may be expected to attend meetings, trainings, or conferences.
  • When driving for state business, the employee must be able to legally operate a state or privately-owned vehicle; OR provide alternate transportation while on state business.

Tools & Equipment:
  • This position uses standard office furniture and equipment, such as a desk, office chair, cell phone, computer, monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse; and when in the office, the position may also require the use of a printer, phone, fax machine, and/or copy machine. This position requires reliable access to an internet connection sufficient to perform all job duties remotely.
