Job description

Mailchimp is a leading marketing platform for small businesses. We empower millions of customers around the world to build their brands and grow their companies with a suite of marketing automation, multichannel campaign, CRM, and analytics tools.

This team is focused on improving access to our audience data - the tens of billions of records that power feature development across the company - spanning the infrastructure that serves it, the product surfaces built on top of it, the data pipelines that move it, and the ongoing modernization of that entire stack onto Intuit's cloud-first platform.

You can expect to set the team's technical direction, spearhead efforts to establish patterns and processes, and lead the team through examples in your own work. You will collaborate with teams throughout the company and represent our group in cross-departmental projects and forward-looking discussions with Directors and VPs.

At Mailchimp, we value learning, collaboration and clarity. You'll find success here if you enjoy writing code, but you're aware that your job isn't only about shipping: you are a welcoming contributor who knows how to communicate with your team in order to build great software. You prefer using proven technologies to solve interesting new problems. You've broken production environments - and then buckled down, fixed them, and maybe you held a blameless post-mortem about it!

Responsibilities

  • Work cross functionally to understand how teams use our audience data, create solutions for recurring problems, and set our overall technical direction

  • We're an AI-first team. We expect engineers to use AI tooling to move faster in their daily work, and to build audience data foundations that power Mailchimp's AI-driven features.

  • Build, maintain, improve, and promote proper use of the APIs, services, and infrastructure that power Mailchimp's tens of billions of records of audience data

  • Partner with product teams to turn audience data into customer-facing features — shaping the APIs, data models, and platform capabilities that product engineers build on

  • Design, plan, and lead the modernization of the audience data platform as we move into a cloud-first environment, migrating workloads onto Intuit's Modern SaaS (MSaaS) platform and adopting the Services Paved Road

  • Build and evolve the data engineering foundations — large-scale pipelines, streaming, and storage — that keep audience data accurate, timely, and available at scale

  • Empower team members by providing technical guidance and mentorship

  • Embrace and demonstrate our values: humility, creativity, and independence

    Technologies You'll Work With

Our environment spans Mailchimp's existing stack and Intuit's platform as we modernize. You won't need every one of these on day one, but this is the landscape:

    • Intuit Modern SaaS (MSaaS) platform: Intuit Kubernetes Service, Intuit API Gateway, and Service Mesh, with services created and managed through Developer Portal and the Services Paved Road

    • Mailchimp Monolith: PHP, MySQL, React, JR2, API

    • Containers & orchestration: Docker and Kubernetes (largely abstracted by the MSaaS platform)

    • Services & APIs: Spring Boot with Java and Kotlin on the paved road; GraphQL via the Netflix DGS framework and Apollo Managed Federation (Intuit's One Intuit GraphQL / OIGQL supergraph); plus Mailchimp's existing PHP and Go services

    • Data engineering & ML infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform (GCP) microservices, with Cloud Spanner, Cloud SQL, and Dataflow powering at-scale data pipelines and predictive/ML workloads (e.g., bounce prediction, revenue forecasting, subscriber analysis)

    • Streaming & eventing: Kafka-based event publishing

    • CI/CD & infrastructure as code: Jenkins shared libraries and GitHub Actions; Terraform-managed infrastructure following Infrastructure-as-Code principles

Qualifications

We'd Love to Hear From You If
  • You have experience driving cross functional projects and communicating the technical aspects to both engineering and non-technical teams

  • You have experience with distributed systems, including aspects of load management, monitoring, and building resiliency

  • You have experience modernizing or migrating systems onto a cloud-first or Kubernetes-based platform

  • You have worked with large-scale data - building or operating data pipelines, event streaming, or high-volume data stores

  • Coding experience in PHP, Go, Java, Kotlin, or other languages that can be demonstrated through a portfolio of code

  • Familiarity with GraphQL, GCP, or Kubernetes-based platforms is a plus (but not required - we'll help you get there)

  • You are a self starter that can work independently while also putting an emphasis on mentorship of those around you

  • You are passionate about building and delivering great features for customers
