Remote Music Percussion information

What are some common challenges faced by remote music percussionists and how can they be addressed?

Remote music percussionists often encounter challenges such as latency issues during live collaborations, limited access to studio-quality equipment, and difficulties in effectively communicating musical nuances with other musicians online. To address these, investing in reliable audio interfaces, using high-speed internet connections, and leveraging collaboration tools like real-time audio platforms can help minimize delays and maintain sound quality. Regular communication with team members and sharing detailed notes or recordings also ensures everyone stays musically aligned, fostering smoother remote sessions.

What are remote music percussionists?

Remote music percussionists are musicians who specialize in playing percussion instruments and work from a location separate from their clients or collaborators. They record and produce percussion tracks in their own studios, then deliver the files digitally for use in projects such as songs, films, or commercials. This arrangement allows clients to access skilled percussionists regardless of geographic location, making collaboration more flexible and efficient. Remote percussionists often use high-quality recording equipment and software to ensure their contributions fit seamlessly into various musical settings.

What is the difference between Remote Music Percussion vs Remote Music Producer?

AspectRemote Music PercussionRemote Music Producer
CredentialsMusic theory, percussion instruments, possibly music production softwareMusic theory, DAW proficiency, production certifications
Work EnvironmentHome studio, recording sessions, live performancesHome studio, mixing, mastering, project management
Industry UsagePerforming, recording percussion parts for tracksOverseeing entire music projects, arranging, mixing

Remote Music Percussion focuses on performing and recording percussion instruments, often requiring musical skills and instrument knowledge. Remote Music Producer manages entire music projects, including arranging, mixing, and overseeing recordings. While both roles may work remotely and require music industry knowledge, percussionists specialize in performance, whereas producers handle the overall production process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Music Percussionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Music Percussionist, you need strong foundational percussion technique, sight-reading abilities, and a solid understanding of music theory, often supported by formal music education or professional experience. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), recording equipment, and collaborative platforms like Zoom or Soundtrap is typically required. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and clear communication are vital soft skills for coordinating with other musicians and clients remotely. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality recordings, effective collaboration, and reliable delivery in a virtual professional music environment.

About Surya Sound Temple

Surya Sound Temple is a private music sanctuary in Bushwick, Brooklyn, dedicated to instrumentalists, producers, and artists exploring sound through creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions.

Our studio is home to a growing ecosystem of original projects, including:

  • Electrobones – handcrafted wooden MIDI percussion instruments and acoustic pickups
  • Khartal – modern ergonomic hand percussion inspired by traditional Indian instruments
  • Art of Tabla – percussion education rooted in the tabla tradition
  • Speedbag Drummer – rhythm-based coordination and movement training

In addition to our educational programs, we design and manufacture products, produce creative media, and offer recording and content production services.

About the Internship

This internship is designed for individuals who want real-world experience inside an independent creative studio.

Rather than making coffee or filing paperwork, you’ll contribute to active projects while learning how a multidisciplinary music studio operates.

This position is experience-based and is ideal for students, recent graduates, creatives, and musicians looking to build their portfolio, receive mentorship, or earn a professional reference.

Responsibilities

Depending on your interests and strengths, you may assist with:

  • Studio operations and organization
  • Videography and photography
  • Video editing and social media content
  • Music production and recording sessions
  • Instrument setup and tuning
  • Product development and creative research
  • Marketing and community outreach
  • Administrative and project support
  • Event preparation and documentation

Every internship is slightly different based on current studio projects and your individual skills.

Who We’re Looking For

We value curiosity, initiative, and a genuine passion for music.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Musicians or artists
  • Interested in recording, media, design, or creative technology

Bonus skills include:

  • Pro Tools
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Photography or videography
  • Graphic design
  • Woodworking or instrument repair
  • Social media content creation

Selection Process

We receive a large number of internship applications throughout the year and accept only a small group of interns.

We’re not looking for perfect résumés—we’re looking for people who have taken the time to understand our work and can explain why they want to be part of it.

Before applying, we encourage you to explore our projects and learn about what we create.

  2. Send us:
    • A brief introduction about yourself
    • Your résumé (optional but encouraged)
    • Links to your portfolio, social media, or creative work (if available)

We believe meaningful experience comes from curiosity, commitment, and contributing to something larger than yourself. If that resonates with you, we’d love to hear from you.
