The main difference between a Remote Motorcycle Test Rider and a Motorcycle Test Rider is the work environment. Remote riders often test motorcycles virtually or on designated routes remotely, while traditional riders perform on-site testing at physical locations. Both roles require similar credentials, but remote roles offer flexibility and virtual testing options, whereas on-site roles involve direct physical testing.

What are Remote Motorcycle Test Riders?

Remote Motorcycle Test Riders are professionals who evaluate motorcycles by riding them in real-world conditions, often outside of a manufacturer's main facility or test track. They provide detailed feedback on aspects such as performance, safety, comfort, and handling. The 'remote' aspect means these riders typically work from various locations, sometimes from home or in different regions, to test how motorcycles perform in diverse environments. Their insights help manufacturers improve design and function before releasing motorcycles to the public.

What are some common challenges faced by remote motorcycle test riders, and how can they be managed?

Remote motorcycle test riders often encounter challenges such as adapting to diverse road conditions, maintaining consistent communication with engineering teams, and accurately documenting ride feedback. To manage these challenges, riders should prioritize thorough preparation before each test ride, use standardized reporting tools, and establish clear routines for remote check-ins. Staying organized and responsive helps ensure that valuable data is collected and shared efficiently, contributing to the improvement of motorcycle performance and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Motorcycle Test Rider, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Motorcycle Test Rider, you need advanced riding skills, a valid motorcycle license, and typically experience with various motorcycle types. Familiarity with data logging equipment, GPS systems, and sometimes diagnostic software is essential for accurately reporting test results. Attention to detail, strong communication, and a high level of self-discipline are crucial soft skills in this independent role. These competencies ensure thorough, reliable feedback on motorcycle performance, contributing to product development and rider safety.

Job description

Software Engineer, Driving Behaviors

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Senior Staff Test Engineer, Driving Behaviors.

You will:

  • Develop metrics and models to evaluate and enhance the performance, safety and scalability of our self driving system
  • Evaluate new models or methods to assess their performance and applicability to problems
  • Find new ways to gather the required data needed to improve our metrics and models
  • Communicate benefits and limitations of new models and metrics to partner teams
  • Integrate and deploy metrics and models on fleet-wide data

You have:

  • 5+ years of experience in Software Engineering for robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other complex hardware/software systems
  • Experience testing such systems at all levels from unit tests to comprehensive end-to-end test campaigns.
  • Solid understanding of physics, geometry, and dynamics
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python
  • Ability to learn and utilize new frameworks quickly, employing AI tools or otherwise
  • Experience training new applications on existing ML architectures and improving existing applications

We prefer:

  • 8+ years industry experience
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Experience building and testing autonomous systems
  • Experience using LLMs and VLMs in production environments

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Salary Range $175,000—$215,000 USD
