Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Applications and Mechanical Design Engineer to join our US Engineering team. The mechatronic product portfolio of the Transportation business is relatively broad from small valve cartridges up to integrated systems with several valves and closed loop control electronics. These products are mainly used in commercial vehicles and off-road vehicles.
In this dual role as both applications and design engineer this is a pivotal role within the global team to deliver our new product developments.
Work Environment: This role is flexible for remote working, however must be located in the Greater Detroit Area.
Key Responsibilities
You will deliver and coordinate building key technical relationships within the customer organization and the development and design of customized solutions from the start of a project to the start of series production. Key responsibilities include:
• Working closely with the IMI Transport sales team helping to build clear understanding of the customer product development plans
• Conducting regular customer visits and building strong relationships within the customer organisations
• Take part in, (and in some cases lead) technical discussions with customers, able to develop product concepts and new ways of fixing customer problems.
• Evaluating technical customer requirements in the form of specifications and creating your own technical specifications for suppliers.
• Understanding the interfaces between our product and the customer system and ensuring these are compatible and also able to explore further opportunities for product enhancement.
• Creating sophisticated and innovative systems, that meet the customer requirements.
• Leading a team of engineers in the development of new products and systems.
• Defining and harmonising the technical requirements of the development tasks assigned and ensure that assemblies are provided for the next development steps in line with deadlines, functions and installation requirements.
• Support the global procurement team in the evaluation and selection of suitable suppliers.
• Creating and checking schedules and cost plans ensuring that the product development is to plan and to cost.
• Initiating corrective measures if necessary.
• Defining and, if necessary, developing test set-ups and equipment
• Analysing test results and monitoring the design implementation.
• Leading design reviews and D-FMEA workshops.
Critical Competencies for Success
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, specialising in mechatronics or mechanical engineering required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the production-orientated design of mechanical components
  • Experience of working with customers and being able to hold detailed conversations on product design requirements
  • Experience of developing products from concept to serial production
  • Experience in working within cross-functional teams and automotive core tools (APQP, PPAP)
  • Experience in working with FEM calculation methods is preferred, e.g. Ansys and system simulations, e.g. Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience working within the Automotive sector is highly desirable, preferably commercial vehicles.
  • Experience with pneumatic chassis applications would be desirable.

Competencies:
  1. Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical skills and the ability to think independently following structured processes.
  2. Collaboration and Influencing: Highly collaborative, with able to work effectively in cross-functional teams, to drive consensus and achieve objectives.
  3. Strong 2D/3D CAD skills, preferably in Creo or Solidworks.
  4. Knowledge of the design of electro-pneumatic systems.
  5. Confident in dealing with customers and suppliers.
  6. A high degree of initiative, independent, goal-oriented work.
  7. High level of customer orientation with a commercial acumen.
  8. Fluent in English writing and speaking.
  9. Experience in working with global teams an advantage.
