Remote Lisp Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Lisp Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Lisp Programmer, you need strong proficiency in Lisp programming, a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, and experience with functional programming concepts. Familiarity with development environments like SLIME for Emacs, version control systems such as Git, and sometimes cloud-based collaboration tools is essential. Effective self-management, problem-solving, and clear communication skills help you collaborate with distributed teams and deliver high-quality code independently. These skills are crucial for producing reliable, scalable software solutions while working remotely and integrating with team workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Lisp programmers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Lisp programmers often encounter challenges such as limited real-time collaboration, managing asynchronous communication, and troubleshooting complex code without immediate peer support. To address these issues, leveraging version control systems, participating in regular virtual stand-ups, and utilizing collaborative coding platforms can enhance teamwork and productivity. Additionally, engaging with online Lisp communities and documentation helps resolve technical roadblocks and fosters a sense of connection with other professionals.

What is remote Lisp programming?

Remote Lisp programming involves writing and maintaining software using the Lisp programming language while working from a location outside of a traditional office, typically from home or any other remote environment. Programmers use online collaboration tools, version control systems, and communication platforms to work with teams or clients. The job often focuses on developing, debugging, and optimizing code for applications in fields like AI, symbolic computation, or automation. Remote Lisp programmers need strong self-management skills and a deep understanding of Lisp dialects such as Common Lisp or Scheme. This setup allows for flexible work arrangements and access to a global job market.

What is the difference between Remote Lisp Programming vs Remote Functional Programmer?

AspectRemote Lisp ProgrammingRemote Functional Programmer

Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Remote Lisp Programming focuses on developing software using Lisp languages, often in specialized or research settings. Remote Functional Programmer involves working with functional programming languages to build scalable, maintainable software. While both roles require strong coding skills and often similar credentials, Lisp programmers typically work with specific legacy or niche languages, whereas functional programmers may work across various languages emphasizing functional paradigms.

Job description

At ANS, we're not just a consulting engineering firm-we're a team of trailblazers shaping the future of multi-disciplinary engineering. Recognized as one of theBest Places to WorkandTop 10 Hottest Engineering Firms in the USby Zweig Reports, and featured inInc. 5000's Top 250for our staggering 1,748% growth, we're proud of what we've built and where we're headed.

We're allergic to bureaucracy, thrive on innovation, and embrace data-driven decisions. If you love collaboration, creativity, and a fast-paced environment, we might just be your perfect match!

Our team includes professionals licensed in over 20 states, with more than 70 years of collective experience. We pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages growth and professional development.

At ANS, you'll enjoy paid vacation, sick, and personal time off; support for continuing education and community involvement; and comprehensive healthcare, vision, and dental benefits for eligible employees.

We are transitioning our HV engineering group to SBS Substation Design Suite (SDS) as our primary production platform, and we are looking for the person who will own that transition end-to-end. This is not a drafting role and it is not a pure IT role, it sits at the intersection of substation engineering, design standards, and production automation. The right candidate will be a substation designer or engineer with deep AutoCAD and SDS experience who can work alongside our discipline leads, delivery team, and technology group to build a scalable and high-quality design production system.
Key Responsibilities:
  • SDS Program Ownership: Own the SDS/SBS AutoCAD rollout roadmap, content backlog, and release cadence. Manage the transition from standard AutoCAD to SDS as the default workflow for standard substation projects.

  • Content Governance: Coordinate with Engineering Leads to maintain block libraries, naming conventions, attribute rules, sheet setup standards, and template release controls. Ensure every block, symbol, and template has an owner, revision date, approval status, and intended project type.

  • Training and Adoption: Develop and manage a role-based training program covering new users, checkers, project engineers, content owners, and production contributors. Track adoption metrics and report on progress against rollout milestones.

  • Technology and AI Integration: Coordinate with the ANS technology team on AutoCAD LISPs, automation scripts, and AI integrations. Ensure SDS outputs are structured to support automated checking workflows.

  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with Engineering Leads, and the technology and automation team to ensure SDS is integrated properly into design workflow.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Hands-on experience with SBS Substation Design Suite (SDS) or SBS AutoCAD in a substation engineering production environment. Candidates with deep AutoCAD substation experience and demonstrated ability to learn SDS will be considered.

  • Strong understanding of substation design P&C, Physical, or both. Ability to communicate credibly with engineers and reviewers on content standards and design intent.

  • Experience managing or contributing to AutoCAD block libraries, template standards, naming conventions, or similar design content governance programs.

  • Ability to develop and deliver training content to engineers, designers, and checkers with varying levels of SDS experience, including remote teams.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD LISP, scripting, or automation tooling is a strong plus. Experience working alongside a technology or software development team is valued.

  • Strong organizational and program management skills. Comfortable managing a backlog, setting release cadence, and communicating progress against milestones to multiple stakeholders.

  • Ability to work as a team player across disciplines. This role requires strong cross-functional communication and the ability to build trust with both engineering and technology teams.

  • Self-starter with strong internal drive and integrity. Comfortable operating in a growing organization where processes are still being built and ownership requires initiative.

Position Requirements:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, engineering technology, drafting, or a related field preferred. Equivalent professional experience in substation design with strong SDS/AutoCAD depth will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • 5+ years of experience in substation design or a closely related field, with demonstrated ownership of production tools, templates, or standards.

  • Not required but Bonus Points for: Being fluent in Spanish
