Cumberland Mutual is seeking a hands-on Lead Database Analyst to architect, optimize, and support enterprise database and cloud data platforms. This senior-level role provides technical leadership across SQL Server and Snowflake environments, driving scalable design, performance engineering, and modern data governance practices. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role - not a people-management position - for someone who wants to drive technical direction through hands-on work rather than managing a team.

With a lean data team, this role combines architecture, engineering, operational support, and governance. This position is ideal for a technically strong database professional who thrives in production-critical environments and wants to influence enterprise data strategy in a growing, cloud-forward organization.

What You'll Do

  • Snowflake & Cloud Data Platform (Required)
  • Design and administer Snowflake data warehouse architecture
  • Build and optimize ELT pipelines within Snowflake
  • Configure virtual warehouses and implement compute/cost optimization strategies
  • Manage advanced Snowflake features (time travel, cloning, zero-copy cloning, micro-partitioning, clustering)
  • Implement Snowflake governance controls including RBAC, data masking, and secure data sharing
  • Monitor usage, storage, and performance metrics to ensure efficiency and reliability
  • Enterprise Database Engineering
  • Architect, develop, and maintain SQL Server databases across production, UAT, and test environments
  • Design and optimize relational and dimensional data models
  • Lead advanced performance tuning (index strategy, execution plans, partitioning)
  • Implement high availability, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery solutions
  • Establish and enforce database standards, governance controls, and security best practices
  • Production & Operational Support
  • Provide on-call support for critical data processes
  • Troubleshoot production issues and perform root cause analysis
  • Maintain data integrity, reliability, and operational controls
  • Partner with infrastructure teams on upgrades, patches, and cloud enhancements
  • Leadership & Collaboration
  • Serve as SME for database architecture and Snowflake best practices
  • Guide developers on SQL optimization and database design
  • Review code and recommend performance and security improvements
  • Translate business requirements into scalable technical data solutions
  • Partner with stakeholders to define KPI data structures and reporting frameworks

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on database development and administration experience
  • 3+ years of production Snowflake experience
  • Advanced SQL development and query optimization expertise
  • Strong background in data warehousing and ETL/ELT architecture
  • Experience with Azure and/or AWS cloud environments

Preferred:

  • Property & Casualty insurance industry experience
  • Duck Creek platform knowledge
  • Experience supporting BI/reporting platforms (e.g., Tableau, SSRS)
  • DevOps/CI-CD experience for database deployments

What Sets You Apart

  • Deep understanding of database internals and performance engineering
  • Strong architectural mindset with hands-on execution ability
  • Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools, with the judgement to critically evaluate and verify their output
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and solutions-driven

Why Join Cumberland Mutual?

  • 35-hour workweek
  • Competitive compensation package
  • Immediate enrollment in Cumberland Mutual's 401(k) plan with a 4% company match
  • High autonomy and ownership in a lean data team
  • Opportunity to shape and modernize Cumberland's data strategy
  • Collaborative environment with direct business engagement
  • Stable organization with long-term growth vision
