What is a Remote Foxboro DCS?

A Remote Foxboro DCS refers to a Distributed Control System (DCS) manufactured by Foxboro (now part of Schneider Electric) that is operated or monitored remotely. This system is used in industrial automation to control processes such as manufacturing, power generation, or chemical processing. Remote operation allows engineers and technicians to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot the DCS from a location outside the physical plant, improving efficiency and safety. These systems are designed for reliability, scalability, and integration with other industrial control systems. Remote capabilities have become increasingly important for supporting flexible work environments and ensuring continuous process oversight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Foxboro DCS Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Foxboro DCS Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), process automation, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in Foxboro DCS platforms, programming languages like Ladder Logic, and experience with SCADA and HMI systems are essential, along with relevant certifications if available. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure reliable system performance, quick troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration with on-site teams, which are critical for maintaining safe and efficient industrial operations remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Foxboro Dcs vs Remote PLC Programmer?

Remote Foxboro Dcs and Remote PLC Programmers both work in industrial automation but focus on different control systems. Foxboro DCS specialists handle distributed control systems for complex processes, while PLC programmers develop and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers for automation tasks. Both roles require technical certifications and are vital in manufacturing and process industries, but they differ in system focus and certification requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Foxboro DCS engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Foxboro DCS (Distributed Control System) engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex system issues without on-site access, maintaining clear communication with plant operators, and ensuring cybersecurity for remote connections. These can be addressed by developing advanced remote diagnostic skills, utilizing reliable remote access tools, and following strict security protocols. Additionally, frequent collaboration with onsite teams through scheduled virtual meetings helps ensure smooth operations and timely issue resolution.

This is a seasoned, standalone role for someone who can operate independently, partner with diverse stakeholders, lead capital projects end-to-end, and bring deep technical judgment to large-scale gas plant and process control challenges.

What You'll Do

  • Independently lead the design, programming, configuration, testing, and implementation of process automation solutions for large, complex systems (e.g., full gas plant builds, high-IO-count installations, integrated PLC/HMI/server architectures)
  • Lead and execute capital projects for automation systems end-to-end, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company guidelines
  • Analyze business processes and recommend automation strategies, including lifecycle management and optimization
  • Develop reusable automation scripts, frameworks, and smart workflows to replicate and improve processes
  • Architect, implement, and support distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), and human-machine interfaces (HMIs)
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and enhance automation equipment and systems, ensuring safety and reliability
  • Conduct technical studies, feasibility reviews, and process hazard analyses
  • Lead integration efforts for data collection and system optimization
  • Support and implement information security measures
  • Produce and maintain automation system documentation
  • Lead alarm rationalization efforts, implement results, and monitor alarm system performance
  • Build out and support remote operations applications and OT systems
  • Maintain operational effectiveness through control loop tuning and loop health analysis
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to other engineers and technicians, sharing best practices and elevating team capability
  • Respond to after-hours and weekend support requests as needed
  • Travel to facilities as needed

What You'll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 5 or more years of relevant automation engineering experience
  • Advanced PLC/DCS proficiency
  • Advanced control loop tuning and loop health analysis proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and design automation systems independently
  • Ability to mentor and lead other engineers/technicians on technical work
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
    • Travel up to 25% to facilities and project sites
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, in support of after-hours and on-call needs
    • Operate a company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads
    • Work safely in industrial environments, around large machinery, chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in varying weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment when on site

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • 7 or more years of relevant automation engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience leading automation on large, complex systems - e.g., full gas plant builds, high-IO-count installations, or integrated PLC/HMI/server architectures
  • Proven track record mentoring or formally leading engineers and technicians in a senior/lead capacity
  • Prior experience supporting an Integrated Control Center (ICC) or remote operations environment
  • Experience with alarm rationalization, OT systems, and capital project leadership end-to-end
  • Experience supporting midstream gas processing, gathering, or pipeline operations
  • Experience with Foxboro DCS and/or DeltaV DCS
