Job description

The Principal Investigator (PI) provides technical and regulatory leadership for Cultural Resource Management (CRM) projects from initiation to completion. They oversee project design, permitting, staffing, fieldwork, data collection, reporting, and compliance with Tribal, state, and federal standards. The PI serves as a mentor to technical staff, ensuring deliverables are accurate, high-quality, and client-ready while guiding stakeholders through complex regulatory processes. This role combines project management, regulatory expertise, and in-field leadership with administrative oversight, client communication, and staff mentorship. The PI plays a critical role in advancing GeoVisions’ mission of delivering excellence in archaeology and cultural resource stewardship.



Requirements
Education

Required:
● Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
● Field school completion or equivalent field training

Preferred:
● Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
● Graduate certifications in CRM and/or GIS Experience

Required:
● At least five (5) years of experience in historic and precontact archaeology/CRM in the Pacific Northwest (esp. Coast, Columbia Plateau, Great Basin) ● Experience leading field crews
● Experience working with Native American Tribes, governments, and communities
● Knowledge of and ability to apply federal, state, and Tribal cultural resource and environmental laws (NHPA, NEPA, AIRFA, NAGPRA)
● Experience implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as well as similar state and local preservation laws and regulations.

Preferred:
● Three (3) years supervisory experience (field or office)
● Advanced specialization in related domains (cultural anthropology, historic archaeology, geography, oral histories, human-environment studies)
● Interdisciplinary team experience with planners and subject matter experts
● Experience with project management (budgets, scheduling, SOWs) Proficiency in GIS technology

Licenses/Certifications
Required:
● Meets Secretary of Interior’s (SOI) professional qualification standards in Archaeology
● Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout the Pacific Northwest

Preferred:
● Listed as an Oregon Qualified Archaeologist (ORS 390.235(6)(b))
● Inclusion on ODOT Qualified Consultant list
● Access to DAHP WISAARD and SHPO OARRA databases

Field:
● Travel to remote project sites required.
● Ability to walk/hike for 8+ hours/day, covering up to 10 miles.
● Carry/lift up to 50 lbs of equipment and personal items over long distances.
● Work in highly variable and extreme weather, including intense heat.
● Navigate uneven/sloped terrain with dense vegetation and wildlife exposure.
● Adapt to changing environments and temporary lodging (motels, remote housing, Tribal facilities, shared accommodations).
