Key Responsibilities of the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist
  • Conduct extensive record reviews with interaction with physicians and nursing staff
  • Participate actively in team meetings and educate staff in the CDI process
  • Perform accurate and timely record review and recognize documentation improvement opportunities
  • Formulate clinically credible queries and ensure effective communication with physicians
  • Follow up on all cases, especially those with queries, and participate in Task Force meetings
  • Manage multiple priorities and resolve discrepancies with HIM staff
  • Input data accurately into the electronic medical record and support clinical documentation strategies
  • Provide consistent service excellence to patients and coworkers
  • Understand and communicate differences in Medicare Part A and Part B guidelines and DRG assignments
Requirements of the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) certification
  • Graduation from a nursing program; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse license (MA RN license)
  • Recent acute care experience, preferably ICU, CCU, or strong Med/Surg, or 4 years recent Case Management experience
  • Passing the CCHC Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDI) Exam
  • Organizational, analytical, writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and deductive reasoning skills
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology, disease process, and regulatory environment
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Windows-based software programs
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills with a professional demeanor
  • Management or supervisory experience preferred
