What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in quantum fabrication?

To thrive in Quantum Fabrication, you need a solid background in physics, materials science, and nanofabrication techniques, often supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, lithography systems, electron microscopes, and quantum measurement tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure precision in device fabrication, drive innovation, and enable successful collaboration in the development of quantum technologies.

What is quantum fabrication?

Quantum fabrication refers to the process of designing, constructing, and assembling devices and materials at the quantum scale, often for use in quantum computing, quantum communication, and advanced sensing. This field involves techniques like lithography, thin film deposition, and etching to create structures small enough to manipulate quantum states. Professionals in quantum fabrication work in cleanrooms and use highly specialized equipment to ensure the precision needed for quantum devices. As quantum technologies advance, the demand for skilled quantum fabrication experts continues to grow.

What is the difference between Quantum Fabrication vs Nanofabrication?

Quantum Fuel Systems / www.qtww.com

Reports to: Facilities Manager

Location: Lake Forest, CA (onsite at company headquarters)

Employment type: Full-time

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $30-$36/hour

JOB PURPOSE

The Maintenance Mechanic Technician must have the skill and flexibility to work on any equipment within the facility and support all departments within the company.

When something breaks down on our floor, you're the one who gets it running again - fast, safely, and right the first time. We're looking for an experienced Maintenance Mechanic Technician who thrives under pressure, knows their way around a schematic as well as a wrench, and takes real pride in keeping industrial equipment in top shape.

This role leans heavily into electrical troubleshooting. if you can read a schematic, chase down a fault, and decide whether it's a fix-it-yourself job or a call-in-the-experts situation, we want to talk to you. You'll also handle basic plumbing, industrial wiring, light machining, welding, and HAZMAT tracking, so versatility matters here as much as expertise.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Keep Equipment Running

  • Respond to maintenance calls with urgency, diagnosing and repairing production and facilities equipment, sometimes picking up where another tech left off.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical issues using task lists, schematics, and hands-on problem solving.
  • Inspect machinery regularly, building out short- and long-term repair plans to keep everything running correctly.
  • Oversee routine maintenance on pumps, lighting, compressors, ovens, and production equipment.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance procedures are in place, followed, and improved over time.

Build & Fix

  • Perform light machining operations (vertical mill, lathe) and welding/fabrication as needed.
  • Tackle basic plumbing and industrial wiring tasks across the facility.

Protect the Team

  • Learn and enforce company safety rules, helping assess and repair potential safety hazards before they become real problems.
  • Ensure HAZMAT materials are properly stored, handled, and disposed of.

Drive Improvement

  • Partner with Engineering and Quality to simplify processes and bring smart automation where it makes sense.
  • Help select and install new equipment.
  • Bring ideas from the floor to make the work environment better for everyone.

Lead & Support

  • Cross-train less experienced team members and jump in to help entry-level mechanics with tougher repairs.
  • Secure quotes from outside contractors and see jobs through to completion when outside help is needed.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This isn't a predictable, clock-in-clock-out role; equipment doesn't break on a schedule. You'll need flexibility to respond to emergencies outside your regular shift and occasionally support facility projects on evenings or weekends, with overtime pay for all qualifying hours as required by law. In exchange, you'll have real ownership over how our equipment runs and a direct hand in keeping the whole operation moving

Requirements

  • Must have five (5) years of professional technical experience which includes experience in diagnosing and performing mechanical systems repair, electrical systems repair, and routine preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to draw and read electrical and hydraulic schematics and diagrams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees, customers, management and respond to instructions/assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Ability to recommend, order, receive, and install replacement parts on a variety of equipment.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook sufficient to document repair activities, log maintenance records, and communicate work orders and updates across departments.
  • Strong communication skills required, both verbal and written; bilingual English/Spanish ability is a plus in our diverse work environment.
  • Work with high-pressure gas (10,000 psi)
  • This position may require driving for business purposes. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license, have access to a reliable vehicle, and maintain the necessary insurance coverage.

PREFERRED, NOT REQUIRED

  • HAZMAT Certification
  • Trade certification (welding, electrical, construction)
  • PLC Programming experience
  • Natural gas controls

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is primarily a manual labor position requiring the employee to spend approximately 8 hours per day in a shop environment. They will be walking and standing for extended periods reaching with hands and arms operating equipment, occasionally required to sit, crouch, and kneel. Vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus. Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
